  1. We are prepaying as much as possible this cruise to avoid the "sticker shock" when we see our sail and sign account on the last night. We're not doing Cheers because we found that doesn't work for us with my hubs being a much bigger drinker than I am. We've analyzed our last several cruises and think that if we buy $500 worth of "bar cash" precruise that should almost cover it. We see it like having Cheers, but without the limits that Cheers imposes - we can get buckets of beer and souvenir glasses (I'm a sucker for the shooters in the MDR and the servers all know it...lol) and I can get my husband's beer, my son's n/a Miami Vice and my margarita all at the same time without each of us making our own trip to the bar. And we're still $300 less than Cheers for 2 adults.

  2. Perhaps someone can give me some suggestions regarding a hotel. The beach is not important to us in San Juan. We'll be having plenty of beach time on the cruise. We really just want to explore Old San Juan. We would like a place to stay that's clean and well kept and convenient for visiting OSJ. Price is defintely a consideration since we would rather spend our money on experiences than a bed and a shower. That being said though, we don't want to stay in a dump. We are planning on coming in 2 days before our cruise and we will have our teenaged son with us. Do we HAVE to stay in OSJ to be able to enjoy sightseeing there? What other areas do you recommend? If we don't stay in OSJ, how bad is it getting there to tour the sights. And then of course, we'll need to get from our hotel to the port on cruise day. We don't plan on renting a car. What are our other transportation options? Thanks!

  3. No offense to the Emerald City, but when we cruise out of Seattle next summer, we do not want to stay in the city or out near SeaTac for the few days that we will be there before the cruise. It seems, however, that everyone chooses one of those two options. Last year, we did stay in the city near the space needle and liked it. However, we are very outdoorsy types and would like to explore Washington's coastal areas or maybe even go further inland (Mt. Rainier for example). Does anyone have suggestions of where to stay, within say an hour or so of the port, that would put us either closer to the coast or closer to "the countryside". Obviously, we will be renting a car and don't mind driving. Oh, there's 5 of us - 4 adults and a preteen. Thanks!!!

  4. Skagway- Trying to decide whether or not to go up to the Yukon with a private van company or jeep tour. I have found a guided jeep company and a company where we rent the jeeps ourselves to tour on our own. Suggestions or comments greatly appreciated!

We just returned and rented from Green Jeep tours. It was our first time to Alaska and we enjoyed the freedom of being on our own... stopping when we wanted for as long as we wanted. We saw many others who rented regular passenger rental cars as well as other green jeep renters along the road. The 4 door jeep that we had was $207 for the day. The 2 door is smaller of course and a little bit cheaper. You have to refill the gas tank(which is normal for any rental) and AK gas was pretty pricey, but they got good gas mileage. They let us use a copy of Murray's guide and also included a follow along CD which narrated the trip by mile marker reference which was nice. Oh, and a cooler of snacks and water too. Since we were 2 couples we had no problem paying just over $100 per couple for a day of fun. Couldn't find a ship excursion that inexpensive for sure. I'm not sure how it compares cost-wise to a regular rental, but we figured, what the heck, we're on vacation and drive normal boring cars every day...lol. BUT, you are told that you are definitely NOT to go off-roading with them (didn't really see where you could anyway, but I wasn't really looking for it knowing that we couldn't). Hubby says he saw places tho :) We did hear a "story" of someone on our ship who broke a tie rod off-roading and missed the ship to the next port. Truth factor of that "story"=unknown, however. We were that we could use the 4wd if necessary (not sure what occasion that would be). The views were simply stunning the whole way, though, no matter what kind of vehicle people were driving. Will probably do it again when we go back next year. And, they were super nice to deal with from reservation, to pick up at the pier, to drop off. Added bonus...their "office" is in a popcorn store. Got a free bag since it was my actual bday.

  5. We did not cruise out of Ft Lauderdale, we cruised out of Port Canaveral and it was 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids in one cabin) and they checked all of our papers for all of us before being issued our FTTF stickers and allowing us to board. They even made a big deal out of it to my youngest telling him how "special" that sticker made him. So, I would definitelyly try to get your daughter booked into your room so there is no problem with her boarding with you under FTTF. Good luck.

  6. We are on the Miracle leaving 7/15. We're doing Green Jeep tour with another couple. $207 for a 5 passenger jeep for the day. $103 per couple plus gas...oh yeah! They say there's only 2 roads in Skagway and the road out of town actually kinda parallels the train route so it's hard to get lost. Plus we can stop whenever and wherever we want for sightseeing. Can't wait! Call or email Green Jeep. They have been very nice to deal with.

  7. I found a discount BCD code for Budget Rental Cars that I thought I would share. It is one of their codes so no membership needed and nothing shady about it.

It's good at various locations in Florida and also works on one-way rentals (like between Ft Lauderdale and Miami) as well as some non-airport locations. For my particular mini-van rental it does limit it to 125 miles but on my friends sedan rental, it includes unlimited miles.

The code is Y937800 and works with Budget coupons that you may have in addition from places like Costco, Entertainment Book, etc.

    Gina

OMG - Thank you Gina. I just used this code to get a rental for our cruise in a couple of weeks. I was going to use a shuttle service, but then I got nervous since I'm kind of a control freak and didn't want to rely on someone else to get me to the port - lol.
