And it has been confirmed VS engines failed due to low oil levels

Not quite what happened is it?

The oil level was within operating range, the rough seas caused enough surge in the oil tanks for the pick up to draw in air and drop the oil pressure sufficiently for the safety cut off to activate to prevent damage

if the engine failed, they wouldn’t have got it to start again

If the emergency power source for the AIS is turned off for maintenance/testing, the AIS battery will fade eventually.  And sometimes in shipyard the navigating officer will turn everything off on the bridge to prevent possible damage.

The bridge is torn apart for upgrading systems, radars stripped, gyro upgrades... I’m not entirely sure which actual bit transmits location, but we know when things are all off because the location map on the TV channel shows us just off the west coast of Africa where it narrows, no matter which yard we are in around the world... gps 0,0 is the default position

AIS is showing that Carnival Sunrise has left the dry dock in Cadiz, maybe for sea trials? Does anyone have an update as to when Oasis will leave Freeport? - I understand it may take 12 days for the trip at full speed.

AIS is lying, of that I can promise you

scheduled for sea trials the 15th - 18th

They might have, just not publicly.  I suspect it comes in the form of a letter and money.

Same here and I miss them.

I wonder if that poster might be bound for Bahamas in the next day or two. If he is safe travels to him and I hope his wife is doing well too.

He’s busy trying to make sure people get to see the Sunrise, but you don’t do this for this long without receiving a lot of videos and pictures and information when things like this happen somewhere you spend 5-6 months of your life every year 😉

I remember sailing Oasis back in the earlier days with bad modules for many sailings over a duration of time. They were like having a large cluster of bad pixels on your TV...black boxes. There must have been a reason they weren't fixed for a very long time. In any case I wouldn't expect Royal to be worrying about putting that Aquatheater back  into showroom condition...I think they would be happy just getting it back together and somewhat presentable....especially since its going back into dry dock for a major refurb in fall. Removing those screens completely till the refurb I wouldn't even believe probably isn't  out of the question.

Agree with that, it’s very possible the screens are due for upgrading in the long dry dock coming up, if it’s not cost effective to repair, they’ll go without

I'd think there would be some kind of escort just in case she runs into bad weather along the way.

For some reason, the video screens keep popping into my mind. I'm pretty sure you can't go out to your local Best Buy and purchase 2 more. Are they special order? Is Royal on the phone with Samsung promising free cruises if the factories can manufacture them in time? Are they going to raid Oasis-5 for parts?

The screens are modular panels and easily replaced, spares kept on board for failures. They’ll need stripping and the frame replaced / straightened, but it’s a day or two to strip down once the scaffold is up, and a good crew can cable and replace the panels again in one long day when needed

Are we even sure she moved? I wish there was a live on board webcam or port webcam we can see what's going on live time. I do notice that the smaller tugs boats that were the neon blue dots are no longer there. Hopefully she did move as that would be progress!

Yes, it’s out of the dock and alongside the pier by the car park for the yard

Hello all.  I have been following this thread since there is more information here (or easier to find) than in other places.

The evacuation video brings to me a big issue that nobody has mentioned.  Did anyone notice that they had to walk under the fallen crane on the port side of the floating dock to evacuate to dry land?  What if that section of the boom had broken off and fallen into that area blocking access?  Was there a different evacuation route they could use?

There’s two ramps up to the dock walls, one port and one starboard. There are also stairs down within the walls but they’re no use if the dock isn’t dry

gangways from the ship to the dock wall were not usable on one side, so the only option was to use the exit and go under the crane. The walkways on the ramps are closed in and caged over head for safety / falling items on the newer dock 3, I honestly can’t recall for definite if they are or not on dock 2... I seem to think they are, will look back through some pictures

i googled Cadiz, Spain in maps and you can see a cruise ship in one of their dry docks being worked on. its either a salvage job or a rebuild... it looks very extensive. plenty of room in the dock too, probably where Oasis is going to dock as the other one is much smaller

That’s the old splendour of the seas, now a TUI ship I believe... was a long time ago that was in Cadiz

Your trip may go forward, but there’s no telling once it gets to Spain for the repairs.  They will most likely get there in a week and start working on it.  Once the cane has been removed.

The big dock in Cadiz is currently occupied with Carnival Triumph’s major refit / renaming works to become Sunrise, not scheduled to leave until the 15th for preliminary sea trials and may well have booked the dock longer incase sea trials reveal issues.

So the delay may be the dock availability rather than the time needed to get there

Antique structure?  You know the history of this drydock?  Please provide some information.  And you know the findings of all the class surveys of this dock since the Oasis did this first in 2014, and the Allure in 2016?  Just because the majority of floating drydocks in the US date from WWII, that doesn't mean every one in the world does.  And, I don't see any evidence that the dock collapsed, the bow on picture does not show the wingwalls leaning towards each other as if the bottom had folded.  Sorry, I don't buy the overloading theory.

Dock 2 came from Portland Oregon I believe. There’s probably a way to find it’s history if you’re that interested

  12. Agreed, but how many years ago was that? How many ships in there since last time? How much weight lifted over and over on an antique structure?

im not disputing they may well have lifted it the same amount. I’m saying to me it’s clear they put more weight that the dock bottom could cope with down the centre of it

cranes don’t just fall on ships for no reason... its friends don’t then lean on ships out of sympathy for their fallen friend

neither cause cofferdams to flood without warning, and certainly don’t cause a ship the size and weight of the Oasis to fall over

they lifted the ship too high is my guess,  put weight way beyond what the dock bottom could take in the middle of a flat structure being lifted at its edges and it bent so the walls folded in and the cranes fell / rested on the ship. The dock bottom sinks as the walls fold in and the cofferdams flood.

the only real unknown is what damage the cofferdams did during this, and whether the middle cofferdam has gone through the dock bottom or through the hull for the ship to be at that angle now... the fact they’ve not dropped the dock and let the ship upright itself is not a good sign either way

  14. Before rumour mill goes crazy, nobody got fired... I was asked politely to refrain from enabling pictures to appear on here, due to the scale and nature of those seeing them. I was never particularly thoughtful about what I took pictures of, and they prefer a 'nicer' portrayal of their ships I guess.

I was always playing the better to ask forgiveness than permission angle, so when asked to stop I obliged. Seemed a good idea once known for the pictures to disappear incase it did ever escalate above the person that approached me. So it was requested they were removed from here by me, and I appreciate that admin obliged. We had a good run, but nothing lasts forever... Smiling that someone else has taken up the role I played though, enjoy them while they are available, and don't worry too much about how they end up here!
