Rome 110 Red Bus

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used the Rome 110 Red Bus, that you can hop on and off at certain places.

Runs every 10 minutes it says, and costs about 17 Euro per person

Lot's of people have used the bus and posted on the board if by chance you wanted to do a search there is quite a bit of info on this board. It is like the Hop/on in other cities and the ticktets are generally good for 24 hours.Good way to see the sights.

You can certainly get to many of the main tourist sites on the 110 bus. However, it wil be slower than walking, using the metro, using normal buses, etc. If you don't want to deal with doing some research in advance (to determine the routing) and/or don't want to deal with "normal" public transportation, there is noting wrong with using this service. Just as long as you understand that it will be slower and more expensive.

It does have the advantage of a hostess on-board who can and will sometimes answer questions and there is an audio commentary in multiple languages.

There are many double decker hop on hop off buses in rome the usual cost for 48hours is between 20 and 24 euros and 18 -20 for 24 hour pass but beware they run every 30 minutes according to all the signs we saw before embarking but were often left stuck in the middle of nowhere for an hour and half without any turning up if they get stuck in traffic which often happens they would take a shortcut and proceed to where they should have been at the time and if not many folk were using them at night they would just stop and go home we stayed at an apartment near the vatican and used 2 different bus companies for 48 hours each they both stopped at the vatican but had a couple of different sites from each other but in all honesty found most of the sites were within walking distance apart from the vatican and 4 times we were stranded and had to take a taxi or the metro to get home or to the next site before it closed so if you are staying anywhere near the spanish steps trevi fountain its all reasonable close we are in our late 60s and managed to walk round most of the sites that side of the river and as for the commentary its a tape they play and often is out of sync with where you are value for money definitely not. we were there 2 weeks ago and if we did it again would just use the public transport metro and buses and a map

Since you asked only about the bus I tried to address just your question...most of the sights are very walkable from one to the other, and if you are staying in Rome I would do this or if staying in Rome do the loop and not get off the bus to "see" the sights and then take it to the furtherest one and start from there if not walkable to the next sight. They usually run fairly well and if high traffic time then make sure you are in a walkable situation.Pick up a brochure of one or two of them and see if they fit your bill.I would say Rome is proableby the hardest given the streets and the traffic re the HOHO's

We were in Italy this summer (not on a cruise), and we tried the 110 bus -- not worth it (IMO). As other posters have mentioned, it's slower than just using other forms of transportation and walking. They do run fairly frequently, but you have to find your way to one of their desginated stops. If you want to just stay on for the loop, and simply view the sights, it takes about two hours. If you want to take advantage of the fact that you can get on and off at your pleasure, it's tedious at best. We got off at one of the stops, spent some time walking, visiting the area and the attractions, etc., and then wanted to get back on. The problem was, we had a hard time finding another stop (after exploring the area), and once we did, had to then wait for the bus. Rome is really so convenient, and taxis aren't really that expensive, that it just didn't make sense to have done this. Honestly, for four of us, it was a pretty expensive waste of time!

We purchased 24 hour tickets on one of the sightseeing buses near St Peters mid afternoon on our first day in Rome after the cruise.

We did a couple of circuits of its tour before finishing up at the Trevi fountain. The next day, after our visit to the Vatican Museums we used up the rest of the tickets 24 hours to get back to our starting point for our walking.

We liked the bus, as we had liked the one in London, as a way of getting our bearings and seeing a lot of things quickly and then deciding on what we classified as MUST SEE.

The audio facilites were unsynchronised and it was hard to find out how to get the English version so we finished up leaving the little ear buds supplied on the bus after the first circuit.

The rest of the time we walked or used the metro, and some route buses and trams. The only public transport we were dissappointed in in Rome was the boats on the Tiber. What a ripoff they are, you pay to much once the boat arrives for the pleasure of travelling down an open sewer. It would be nice to see the river after heavy rains up country had flushed it out and the banks were not lined with empty bottles, black garbage bags and general household rubbish like motorcycles and dead pets.
