What is the best price you have gotten for a hotel in January and how did you secure that price? I am looking to stay in a hotel 3 days before cruising and 1 day after in January.

This is on the cusp of peak/off-peak season so rates will be very specific to your dates. Unlike some other area where peak season starts and rates remain high until off-season, i have seen rates go back and forth from week-to-week when searching on the cusp like this (ie- one week rates will be VERY high, the next low, and then high again... with rates being higher a greater percentage of the time as 'the season' kicks into gear.

Priceline and Hotwire are the way to go in this area as San Juan is known for very high rates all year long, although sometimes you can get a good deal when Wyndham has a 'by request' sale; the Inter-Continental also sometimes has a good web rate but this is usually only in off-season.

I have seen January rates in January for resort level properties range between $75-$150+ thru Priceline and Hotwire, dependent upon low/high season as mentioned above.
