San Juan without booking a tour

I am looking at a cruise out of San Juan next January. A couple of years ago I had thought about doing this with my disabled husband and had gotten some ideas about what we might do together.

 

Now he's in a nursing home, and I would be traveling solo. I would only have one or possibly two days in San Juan pre-cruise. What would people suggest if I don't want to book a tour?

With only a day or two I would lean toward the Old San Juan area, we have 3 day pre cruise and will spend 2 in OSJ and the other will be for the biobay trip with some San Juan then the 1 day post cruise will be San Juan area.

Old San Juan is a great city just to walk around and explore the shops, restaurants, architecture and numerous old forts. It is a very pretty city with lots of history. It may be worth signing up for a walking tour, but if you aren't interested, you can easily find your way around on your own. My sister and I always stay in the heart of OSJ so we can be close to everything. We like the Howard Johnson's at Plaza De Armes. We have always felt very safe walking on our own. It's one of my favorite places to visit. Enjoy
