Kiwi_cruiser Posted February 22, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2013 Two years ago today New Zealand was having lunch and at 12:51pm NZDT on 22nd February 2011 mother nature had a nasty surprise for all of us! At 12:51pm NZDT Christchurch had another Earthquake and this time Christchurch was not going to be so lucky! It was Magnitude 6.3 quake which changed the Christchurch landscape forever and sadly killed 185 people. :( And since then Christchurch had had more than 11,000 quakes in two years!! From NZCity Christchurch will on Friday mark the second anniversary of the catastrophic February 22 earthquake, New Zealand's second deadliest natural disaster after the 1931 Napier earthquake. A midday service at Latimer Square is the main focus of memorial events, where families of the victims - 185 people were killed and hundreds more injured - will gather. Mayor Bob Parker says "it's important to acknowledge that the last two years have been extraordinary; the prolonged nature of the aftermath cannot be ignored and our personal and collective grief continues". The service will conclude with one minute's silence at 12.51pm, the time the 6.3-magnitude quake struck two years ago, wrecking much of the central city and turning the eastern suburbs into a quagmire with liquefaction…..
