Atlantis Submarine Questions

Recommended Posts

Has anyone on these boards ever become seasick or claustrophobic on the Atlantis Submarine? And how is the experience on a morning or afternoon ride regarding seeing colors in the coral or fish? I read the night experience is much better, but unfortunately our ship leaves Grand Cayman before evening so that's out for us. Really don't want to spend a lot of money if all we see is drabness and no eye popping underwater sights.

The water is very clear but how colorful the reef appears depends upon depth and penetration of the sunlight.

Closer to mid-day, with the sun high overhead, you will have the maximum penetration of light.

But sunlight is scattered as it penetrates the water. Different wavelengths are scattered at different depths. First the reds disappear, then orange, yellow, and so on through the rainbow. Blue penetrates the deepest, thus most things have a blue tinge at depth.

At night the sub's powerful lights provide a nearby source of light. This is a shorter path through the water and thus less scattering occurs. As a result the colors appear much more vivid and bright.
