Thomson - Playa del Carmen excursions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I am booked on the Thomson dream early next year on the Cuban Fusion cruise for my birthday. When I booked the cruise, the port information for Playa del Carmen in Mexico says you can take a trip to Chichen Itza which is the reason I wanted to take this cruise.

As seen here...

When I have come to book excursions, there is none available for Chichen Itza, only to 3 excursions to Tulum and Xel-Ha park which has left me most disappointed.

Does anybody know if Thomson sometimes add other excursions later as only 3 trips seems quite small to me. I have emailed Thomson and they said the trip was sold out but I don't believe this as I checked the excursions as soon as they went on sale and it has never been an option for a trip, even when browsing the excursion section.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to try and get to Chichen Itza and also, if it's worth going and whether Tulum is a good alternative.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Andy

What a pity that you can't do the excursion you want. We did the Chichen Itza excursion and it involved a 45 minute boat trip and 3 hour drive each way. We just arrived back at the ship as she was due to sail. It is so far that I wouldn't advise you to do it independently or even with another tour company in case you were late back. I would keep checking and check on board. I hope you manage to get something sorted out.

thoms do run an excursion to chichen itza from cozumel (unfortunately the cuban fusion itinerary doesnt call at cozumel)

doesnt appear to be one available from playa del carmen?....how disppointing for you

it is possible that it may be sold out? I havnt been there personally but my guess is that this trip is probably a couple of hours drive from pdc and if there are other ships in plus 100's of resort guests (inc cozumel) there may well have been limited availability, sometimes they do manage to arrange extra spaces at the last minute if there is a demand or cancellations, best to speak to the destination staff when you board

or maybe have a look at independent tour operators (quite a few on the web that specialise in arranging tours for cruise passengers)

I went to Chichen Itza when I was staying near Playa del Carmen and it was a very long day. We got back to our hotel at about 8.30pm. It is a huge site and to do it justice you need to be there for quite a few hours. And it is very, very hot. We were provided with water and umbrellas to combat the heat. There is a lot of walking to do as well although the site is mainly flat.

I did not go to Tulum but some others who did preferred it to Chichen Itza as it was smaller and only less than an hours drive. The trip included time to relax on the beautiful beach.

IMO I would not go on the combined Tulum/ Xel-Ha excursion as you could spend a full day at Xel-Ha as there is so much to do and see there.

Hope this helps, although I know you must be disappointed if you are not able to get to Chichen Itza. Definitely do not DIY and if you go on the local excursions you cannot guarantee when you will get back because it will depend on the number of drop offs at hotels.

I went to both Chichenitza & Tulum when staying at a hotel in Puerto el Carmen. Tulum is much smaller but still interesting and as its right by the sea there may be time to go on the beach. If thats the only Mayan ruins you can get to see, its worth doing.
