How convenient is Taipei subway?

Does anybody know if it is an easy task to take the Taipei's subway to most of the tourist sites?

 

Our family will be on Sapphire Princess in December. I am thinking of taking the train from Keelung and take the subway to most of the sites. I heard that the Main Rail Station at Taipei is also a Subway station. Am I correct?
