gardenmama40 Posted May 5, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2004 We're going on the Wind May 29 and have just about planned our port visits. We're thinking about making our Nawiliwili port visit all about relaxation, laying out on the beach, etc. Hopefully by then the kids(12 and 15) will have had a surfing lesson or two or maybe will take one there. I've read that Kalapaki Beach has small waves and is ideal for swimming, surfing etc. Also read that Poipu beach which is further away is also very nice. My question, finally, is this....How far is Kalapaki from where the cruise ship comes in. Do we need to rent a car to get to the beach or are there shuttles or buses for a nominal fee? How about to get to Poipu? Or any other beach you recommend? Can you snorkle at any of those locations? We're spending most of our port visits renting a car to sightsee and the kids want to have a couple of port visits where they just "chill at the beach". Any feedback is appreciated! mikeap Posted May 5, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Kalapaki is walkable...can't remember exactly how far. It's blocks (sort of), not miles. Maybe a 10-15 minute walk. Take a look at a map and you can get an idea. I've swam there but never snorkeled there. As far as the other beaches, you will need tranportation. I'm not sure if there is any other than renting a car. I'm sure a local will see this post and give you a better idea. I don't remember if Dukes Canoe Club is still there at Kalapaki beach/Marriot. If so, you have to have some Hula Pie! Mike
gardenmama40 Posted May 5, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Thanks Mike, Let's see if anyone else has any info. ......And what's Hula Pie? 5/29/04 NCL Wind, HAWAII
spleen93 Posted May 6, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 6, 2004 This is hula pie ... You can get to Kalapaki by walking - it's close enough. Some people that have done it before have not been happy about the walk though, stating that it's through an industrial area scattered with broken glass. Others have said that the walk was fine. Kalapaki is a great beach to hang out on but has lousy snorkeling. As Mike has mentioned, other beaches will require some other form of transportation to get there. Poipu Beach is about 15-20 minutes away by car. I'm REALLY fond of Poipu Beach though. mikeap Posted May 6, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Spleen!!!! You're killin' me!! I've seen everything...A link to hula pie. Go figure. Now the problem...i'm probably 5,000 miles from the nearest piece of hula pie. What can you do about that?? Ewa Beach huh?? I guess I've flown over your house lots of times. What a beautiful place! I have a good friend that lives on Kauai...in the Kilauea area. Right before the waterfall and bridge, on the North Shore, turn mauka and go 2-3 miles. It's really beautiful. Her husband owns/runs "Beezers" ice cream palor in Kapaa. Man...I sure miss the islands.... Mike

spleen93 Posted May 7, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Mike - were you Air Force stationed on the islands? I'd ship you some hula pie but I think it'd melt before it got to you. Hula pie is available at the restaurants at the web site that I linked to ... but most commonly, associated with Duke's in Waikiki and Kimo's in Lahaina. Lauire Posted May 13, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 13, 2004 HULA PIE!!!!!!!!!! We think the best place to eat this awesome dessert is Keoki's . . . My son loved it soooooo much when we returned home, on his next birthday, he request Hula Pie instead of a birthday cake. (so we did the whole Hawaiian theme birthday!) Actually, quite easy if you can find the macadamia nut icecream . . . just pile that high into a chocolate cookie crust, refreeze & then upon serving top w/ hot fudge & whip cream!!! Hula pie a must when in Hawaii Enjoy! Laurie
gardenmama40 Posted May 13, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted May 13, 2004 Lauire, Thanks for the directions for making the Hula Pie. It sounds divine! Where did you buy the ice cream or did you make it yourself? Sounds like something we need to make and then eat while watching an old Elvis in Hawaii movie a day or two before going to hawaii. You know...begin the mood a little early!! 5/29/04 NCL Wind, HAWAII
Lauire Posted May 14, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 14, 2004 Gardenmama40 It was a couple of years ago that we made the hula pies . . . but I am thinking Hagan Haaz has a Macadamia nut ice cream. I remember using 3 of something so probably 3 quarts to one of the Keeblers chocolate cookie crust (the icecream was piled high). The idea of the Hawaiian birthday party was so fun . . . we grilled fish & chicken & pineapple circles . . . I made Outrigger boats out of pineapple quaters . . . (the pineaple is served like that a lot on the island). We had the fancy drinks with umbrellas . . .etc.etc. We of course had the lei's going on & asked everyone to wear colorful clothing & Hawaiian shirts. We did have Hawaiian music playing along with some old Elvis movies on the TV. I also borrowed from the library some HUGE picture books of Hawaii & had those out & about along with our own Hawaiian scrapebook & sea shells for decorations. Keoki's, where we had our first Hula Pie . . . is an awesome resturant . . . if you are near to them give them a try if even just for a drink . .. they have a great Hawaiian band that plays by the bar. Check out their website . . . & if you want to dine their a reservation is recommended.
