Looking for a copy of HAL's wine list, reasonably current, for planning on our upcoming AK cruise on the Zuiderdam. I know they change regularly, but I'm curious how far in debt we're gonna get from ordering wine! thanks in advance.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON THE VARIETALS IN OUR WINE LIST

CHARDONNAY

The Chardonnay grape variety is a classic white wine grape grown all around the world. The original fame of Chardonnay comes from its success in the Burgundy and Champagne regions of France. Chardonnay takes oak well, and many higher-priced Chardonnays are fermented and/or aged in oak barrels. When Chardonnay is aged in oak barrels, it may pick up vanilla overtones in its aromas and flavor. Some producers put their Chardonnay through malolactic fermentation which reduces crispness and brings out a rich, buttery taste. It's pleasant with just about any dish involving cheese, eggs, fish or fowl.

CHENIN BLANC

Chenin Blanc is a grape variety producing fruity, lightly sweet or sometimes dry wines. This varietal is used for France’s Loire Valley whites, while in the US, it is used mostly for blending. Origins of Chenin Blanc have been traced back to ninth-century Anjou, but it was actually named after the Mont Chenin in Tourraine. In South Africa it is also known as Steen. A high-yielding grape with good acidity, it helps in the ageing of wine. Whether you prefer sweet or more on the dry side, it makes for a good sipping wine. Pair it with salads and cheeses.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

The Sauvignon Blanc grape produces wines of distinction in most of the areas where it is grown. It can tolerate greater heat than many varieties. Sauvignon Blancs are higher in acid and often exhibit “melon” in the nose and tastes. It performs well in the Loire river and Bordeaux regions of France. Because it can be overpowered by the oak flavors, it is usually not often aged in wood. However, with the right taste, it can acquire additional complexity and richness with aging. In the U.S. Sauvignon Blanc is often known as Fumé Blanc. New Zealand enjoys notable success with this variety and produces wines that exhibit tropical passion fruit, melon and mango aromas, and a delicious, dry mouthfeel. Sauvignon Blanc is sometimes blended with small amounts of Semillon in order to “round-out” the taste of the wine. Sauvignon Blanc is especially good when served with seafood.

PINOT GRIGIO- FALANGHINA-GAVI

The Pinot Gris grape variety is known as Pinot Grigio in Italy and Ruländer in Germany. It makes a pinkish-white wine that is crisp, medium-bodied, well-balanced and with nice floral aromas. Pair the Pinot Grigio with salads, white fish and light pastas.

RIESLING

Riesling is considered one of the “noble” grape varieties for

wine-making. Another "aromatic" that is also gaining in popularity, Riesling can be a particularly refreshing alternative to the Chardonnay/Sauvignon Blanc white wine tandem. Unlike its cousin, Gewürztraminer, this varietal has little spice and instead relies on its delicate aromas and subtle flavors for its special niche. Usually lighter in style and sometimes with residual sweetness, it's better paired with lighter fare. The Riesling is a mainstay of German winemaking and also ripens to full maturity in Alsace.

GRUENER VELTLINER

The most planted grape variety in Austria, representing more than 1/3 of all vineyard plantings. This grape is not grown significantly in any other country. It is a white grape that produces a bright, distinctive wine with a spicy aroma and taste. It can be medium to full-bodied. Pair with seafood, soft cheeses and light pastas.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The king of red wines, Cabernet's reputation was established decades ago by the great estates of Bordeaux, although it has proved distinctive in other regions as well. It has the ability to mature into a most complex and full-bodied red wine. It is often blended to increase its complexity. Its flavors are comfortable with simple grilled meats as well as more complex dishes like venison in mushroom sauce. Great and consistent producers of Cabernet can be found in the Napa, Sonoma and Long Island, as well as Australia, Chile, and, of course, the châteaux of Bordeaux, which produce the true benchmark of this varietal.

GAMAY – GRENACHE

The Gamay grape variety makes its best wines in the Beaujolais region of France. Because its wines tend to be light, low in alcohol, high in acidity and very fruity, there is small margin for error before it becomes too thin, too light or too acidic. Cherry flavors dominate the nose and taste of young Beaujolais. The Grenache grape variety is a sweet grape and is one of the most planted in the world. It produces wines that are fruity, full of flavor, and have overtones of spice. In France it is used in making red and rose (Tavel and Lirac) wines in the Rhone river valley where it is widely planted. Grenache is widely planted in Spain where it is known as Garnacha Tinta. Paired best with seafood, pastas and light meats.

MALBEC

Although the Malbec grape is traditionally grown in Bordeaux, areas in the Loire, Cahors, Mediterranean and California also harvest this varietal. It is mainly used for blending, adding a deep red color and tannin, but winemakers in Argentina have taken to this particular grape and now produce Malbec as its own wine. The grape yields soft, chewy fruit with rich, strong flavors often reminiscent of black cherry or plum. Malbec wines are also perfect for aging. Pair it with slow-cooked red meats, such as stew, or with wild game.

MERLOT

This variety was once relegated to blending status, but in the last 20 years it has taken on an identity of its own. When varietally bottled, Merlot has herbal and fruity flavors similar to Cabernet, but also has a smooth and supple character in the mouth without the bite of tannins. It complements the same types of food that Cabernet does, albeit less distinctly. Top producers hail from Bordeaux, Chile, Argentina, Napa, Sonoma and Washington state.

PINOT NOIR – PINOTAGE

Pinot Noir has the potential to be the most seductive, beguiling red wine in existence. In the past decade or so Pinot Noir has shown the greatest increase in quality of any varietal in America. Lighter than Cabernet, Pinots have a richness and intensity of fruit that is unparalleled. The best of them drink like velvet and accompany a wide variety of foods. Pinotage is a grape that grows in South Africa and is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Paired best with beef, lamb, veal, heavier pastas and hearty cheeses.

SANGIOVESE

Sangiovese is the dominant grape in Italy's Tuscan region. It is being replanted in California and elsewhere. The grape is also used to make Brunellos and Chiantis. It is also combined with cabernet sauvignon to produce the “Super Tuscans”. Sangiovese produces wines that are spicy, with good acid levels, smooth texture and medium body. Enjoy with beef, lamd and veal, pastas and aged cheeses.

SHIRAZ-SYRAH

This grape is known as Syrah in France, Shiraz in Australia and either or in the US. Highly aromatic wines with meaty, smoky, spicy and peppery flavors are the trademark of the Syrah grape. When made in a lighter style, it's a good quaffing wine to pair with simple bistro food. When made in a richer style, it's a good accompaniment to lamb and wild game.

TEMPRANILLO

This Spanish varietal has red berry fruits, licorice, floral accents, and a hint of oak on the nose. It’s lively, yet well-balanced, smooth, approachable and easy to enjoy. Delicious with red meat entrées, game and hearty stews, mushroom dishes and hard cheeses.

ZINFANDEL

Real Zinfandel is red, a fact many wine drinkers are rediscovering now that the trend for "white" Zinfandel has stabilized. "Peppery," "briary," "brawny" and "chewy" are only a few of the adjectives used to describe this mouth-filling wine. It has a real zest for matching up with tomato-based pasta dishes.
