Mercure Brisbane King George Square?

Greetings

The hotel is close to the city centre just a short walk away, about 500 metres. I haven't stayed there so unable to give a critique. It is close to bus and rail. The nearest rail station is Roma Street. Museum and Art Gallery and Museum of Modern Art are just the other side of the river. You will need to catch a cab from the cruise terminal if carrying luggage. Go for a ride on the City Cat ferry up and down the Brisbane River, again the ferry wharf is not far from the hotel. Visit South Bank Gardens also on the other side of the river. There are some other nice gardens quite close. If you are up to it there is the Treasury Casino.

If you want any specific info just ask and I will try and oblige.:D

Thanks, Chris! We'll be flying in from Sydney after a few days there. The only thing we have planned for Brisbane is a day trip to the zoo. Would there be local shop's and restaurant's within walking distance of the hotel?

We like to just experience a "new to us" place.

Plenty of places to eat. You will be very close (walking distance) to the Brisbane CBD where you will be able to shop. If going to Australia Zoo it will be a full day. Whilst in Sydney go to Taronga Zoo overlooking the harbour and a nice ferry ride from Circular Quay, it is very nice.

There is a train at Brisbane domestic terminal which will bring you into the city. Closest rail station to the hotel is Roma Street.

Chris, thank you so much for your suggestion's and information!

It's always nice to hear from someone who lives in the city where we're going! :).

You're probably very comfortable taking "the train", "the subway", and/or "the ferry".

We live in a very quiet city and we have none of those option's available!! That mean's that we need a little more "hand holding" than most people who post here !

Again, thanks,

Hi Plant

Another Brizzie Ite here

Brisbane used to be referred to as just a large country town... but in relatively recent times it has grown up a bit.

What Chris has been saying makes a lot of sense, but of course for people who don't have these facilities it can be a bit daunting.

One thing. There are now two Mercure brand hotels in Brisbane. One is the Mercure Brisbane, which is in Quay st. along side the river. The other is the Mercure King George Square..which is the one you are staying in. Until recently it was called The Sebel - Citygate, and it is on the corner of Roma St and Ann St. I have stayed at this hotel and it is fine ... although quite a few years ago it had a reputation (at least one of its bars did) of being a bit of a pick up joint. (At least that's what a friend of mine told me). It is now a lot more sophisticated.

I fancy some of the things mentioned by Chris are more relative to the Mercure on Quay St. ....but they are only two blocks apart so no big deal. In fact your hotel is closer to Roma St Rail and is right in the CBD.

Think of Roma St as the transport hub of Brisbane, because the Bus Lines also use the precinct known as the Roma Street Transit Centre.

There are a lot of eateries in Brisbane...and I think you would enjoy them. Many are Sidewalk style - especially in the Queens St. Mall. Great for casual dining and doing a bit of People watching.

Last year I organised a coach tour of Brisbane for about 30 fellow passengers off the Solstice. Weather was not kind, but we saw a lot. You mentioned the Zoo, and I know a lot of people go to the Steve Irwin Zoo at Beerwah. Its a good (full) day out...but you might also want to consider the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. Its in suburban Brisbane...you can get there by ferry, Bus or cab, and is an easy and pleasant walk around. It is also one of the few places in Australia where you can actually cuddle a Koala..a must do for any visitor.

cheers

Thanks so much to you all! I'm thinking that "Brisbanites" (is that right?) are a lot like us southerner's here in the US-very friendly and very helpful to visitor's :)!

I'm definitely going to check out the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. The Irwin Zoo would be great, but I'm wondering if it's too much (9 hours!) for us. I use a cane when walking for any distance, and DH has back problems that can be aggravated by too much walking :(.

I hope you're all doing well and have a cruise booked :),

If you have mobility problems then Lone Pine is the one for you. Australia (Steve Irwin) Zoo is quite large and the walking is flat but it can be a tiring day. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the info! When I saw that the Australia Zoo was a nine hour experience, I was not at all sure we'd enjoy ourselves. I realize that this trip is a "once in a lifetime", but being exhausted wouldn't give us good memories :(. I'd rather do something easier and remember our Australia adventure as a fun time! :)

Thanks again,
