Can anyone tell me how to get from the port to Rum Point Beach. I was there a number of years ago and it was really beautiful. Not crowded at all. Would like to take my friends there on our cruise in October.

From the port the easiest (and most scenic) way is not quite the fastest. Remember, most of the rental car places are NOT at the port!

  • Starting at the port, head south on the road along the waterfront. The sea should be on your right. Road name changes several times from North Church Street to Harbour Drive to South Church Street.
  • The road will follow along the coast eventually changing name to South Sound Road. Follow South Sound Road until it ends at a roundabout (traffic circle) at Grand Harbour. You will see a Scotia Bank on your left at the roundabout.
  • You basically want to make a right turn at this roundabout which puts you onto Shamrock Road. As you exit you will pass a Royal Bank of Canada on your left. Get in the right lane.
  • The road splits. You want to stay right. Go straight through the next roundabout. Get in the right lane. At the next roundabout you basically want to make a right turn.
  • Follow signs toward Bodden Town continuing on Shamrock Rd. You may catch a glimpse of the sea on your right as you pass Ocean Club and South Shore apartments.
  • About two miles later you will enter Savannah. The road passes through what amounts to a squashed roundabout. You want to go straight through the roundabout. Continue on Shamrock Rd following signs towards Bodden Town.
  • About three miles later you enter Bodden Town. Just as you enter town the road name changes to Bodden Town Road. You are just passing though.
  • As you leave Bodden Town the speed limit will rise to 50mph for about two miles. The speed limit drops back to 25mph as you pass through the community of Breakers. Note the Lighthouse Restaurant on your right.
  • The speed limit goes back up to 50mph. About one mile past the Lighthouse Restaurant you will turn left onto Frank Sound Rd. This is a relatively major intersection.
  • Frank Sound Road crosses the island from south to north. You will pass a Fire Station and High School close together on your left. About two miles past the school the road takes some significant curves. SLOW DOWN!!!!
  • Pass the gas station on your left and the road curves around to your left. The road name changes to North Side Road.
  • About seven miles, and one more road name change later, Rum Point will be on your right.

Remember, making a "right turn" at a roundabout requires you bearing left as you enter the traffic flow around the roundabout and going roughly 3/4 of the way around the roundabout before exiting. Traffic flow is always clockwise around our roundabouts.
