City Bus from Dublin Port to Kilmainham Gaol

Recommended Posts

We will be in Dublin on Friday, October 3 from 8 AM to 5:30 PM. I believe our ship (NCL Star) will dock at Ocean Pier 33. We would like to visit Kilmainham Gaol. Does anyone know if NCL will have a shuttle from the port to the city centre? If there is no shuttle, what bus would we take to get to Kilmainham Gaol?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

You should check with NCL re: shuttle to city center. As for visiting the Goal, we were in Dublin the last week of August. We took the Hop-On Hop-Off RED line, which is available at multiple locations in the city to get to the gaol as well as around the city. The Gaol was very crowded with a long wait time (1-2 hour wait) if you want to tour the interior - get there as early as possible if that's your main stop. The HOnHOff bus would also give you a good overview of Dublin's Highlights. The Guiness storehouse is another potential stop to consider, we enjoyed it.

Dublin is a great city to see, you'll enjoy it no matter which sites you visit

Hi,

If there is a shuttle bus to the city centre, it will probably leave you at the entrance to Trinity College. From there, the quickest way to Kilmainham Gaol is by Dublin Bus number 69 or 79. These go from Aston Quay which is a 5 minute walk from Trinity College (Aston Quay faces the river Liffey beside O'Connell Bridge). The journey time by bus to the Gaol is 10/15 minutes and the fare is €2.35 one way. Please note that no change is given on Dublin Bus.

Both of the HoHo buses, green and red, stop at the Gaol. But the journey time will be much longer as the buses previously visit St Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness Storehouse and the Royal Hospital. A taxi from the cruise terminal to Kilmainham will probably cost around €25.

The Gaol opens at 09:30, so if you head directly there you should be able to gain admission at least some time in the morning. The tour lasts 60 minutes, and if you have to wait for a slot you could cross the road to the Kilmainham Hilton Hotel for a morning coffee.

Thank you Dermot - we will try to make our way directly to the Gaol - we will not pass go and we will not collect our $200!

In August, we took the Princess Shuttle into Dublin (NCL will probably also have one available), immediately got on the Hop On bus and were among some of the first to arrive at the jail. We had a 10 minute wait before the tour started. When we completed the tour and walked out - the waiting line wrapped around the block. Next stop for us was Guinness! ;)
