National Rail Question

Recommended Posts

We will be going on a cruise in August and need some information on a train ticket.

What type of ticket would I purchase? We want to get from

Gatwick to Victoria Station on August 15

Victoria Station to Dover Priority on August 18

Dover Priority to Victoria Station on August 30

Victoria Station to Gatwick on Sept. 1

Can we buy a round trip ticket for the above or do we need to buy each lag seperately?

Also what is the difference in taking the Gatwick Express to Victoria Station verses the National Rail? Gatwick Express is more expensive, is it worth the difference in price.

Any help would be most appreciative as this is our first trip to England and first European cruise.

1) Buy two return tickets Gatwick-Victoria-Gatwick, Victoria-Dover Priory-Victoria

2) The Gatwick Express is just a little faster, that's the only real difference.

we had planned on Canterbury for a day but now we are leaning towards London..from dover priory which london station would you recomend for tourist sights ?

It sounds like a cop out, but It really depends which tourist sites you want to visit :-)

Victoria is closer to Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park etc, Charing Cross is closer to the tower of London. However, you're only talking a couple of miles apart between Charing Cross and Victoria, so it's probably not going to make any difference to you.

The Gatwick Express is not only faster, it is non stop and has much greater provision for luggage. It is much the better option - and for what it is worth the trains are nicer.

Buying a return from Three Bridges (the next station down the line) is actually cheaper than one to Gatwick, although tickets for one type of train are not valid on the other - at least at the moment.

It's worth saying that the Gatwick Express Service is being subsumed into the main service, so who knows what will happen. Normally the quality of service goes down, and I think the units that they use for the Gatwick Express will not be used now, which takes away most of the advantage. As to the exact timescales, you'll have to keep a lookout on the interent. Gatwick Express have their own website.
