Beckertime Posted November 21, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2014 Hi- First time in PR and interested in rum tastings. I know in Mexico, there are many shops that allow for tequila tastings. Does PR, specifically old town, offer a similar experience? I know Bacardi is down the road, but our ship arrives around 3:00 pm and Bacardi closes at 4:00. I don't think we will make it in time and really don't want to rush. Thanks!
tightlyinterfaced Posted November 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2014 I know we stopped at a shop in Old San Juan near the port several years ago that offered tastings (hoping you would buy), but I can't remember a name/location to find out if it's still there. Don Q rum used to have a museum/bar in OSJ that offered free tastings of their rums, but that closed this year. There are tours that offer tastings for a price, but I think you'd be better served finding a bar that has some decent rums, and making friends with the bartender. The two best local rums, IMHO, are Don Q Gran Anejo and Ron del Barrilito tres estrellas (3 stars). Some bartenders will cringe if you ask for anything more than ice in these rums. Bacardi 8 is also a good local rum, but not on par with the other two. I'm told Trigo Reserva Aneja is also good, but I've not tried that one yet. I would think that the Parrot Club and Toro Salao, both in OSJ, would have most or all of these rums. Tom
Ms411 Posted November 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 21, 2014 Hotel El Convention Hotel used to offer rum tastings in early evening, but not sure which day(s). You have to check their website. There was a fee involved.
Beckertime Posted November 22, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted November 22, 2014 Great stuff, thanks everybody. Yes, I enjoy sipping the rums straight, not mixing. I was hoping to discover a few local varieties. So this really helps.
