Carnival in Barcelona?

We have realized that our disembarkation day is Fat/Shrove/Pancake Tuesday and are considering changing our departure plans. It seems the grandest celebrations occur on the weekend and that Sitges gets a bit crazy on Tuesday but I was hoping there might be something to hold us in Barcelona for an extra day even if only a festive atmosphere. Not a very 'seasonal' question I know - Just have figure our flights. Any suggestions?

Hi EnricM and thanks - We would be arriving the morning of February 13 - The last day before the start of Lent - I'm not looking for anything specific just options - A neighborhood parade or festival? Nightlife inspired by carnival? We would be leaving Wednesday for a few days in Porto before continuing to the US so the funeral of the fish is not possible

Around Feb 12th, the city celebrates the festival of Saint Eulàlia, one of the two patron saints of the city -the other one being the Virgin of La Mercè, which festival is celebrated at the end of Sept. Looking at the calendar however it looks like for 2018 that'll probably be 9-11th Feb albeit it could also be 16-18th, that'll be announced closer to the date. So you know what is it all about: http://lameva.barcelona.cat/culturapopular/en/festivals-and-traditions/festes-de-santa-eulalia and here you can see the program of activities for this past February (2017) : http://lameva.barcelona.cat/santaeulalia/en

The Carnival will be indeed around the 10-11th in 2018 but the information about its activities, other than the traditional ones, won't come out until it gets closer to the date. This is a generic page with info about the carnival in Barcelona http://lameva.barcelona.cat/culturapopular/en/festivals-and-traditions/barcelona-carnival Another good source, but again, not updated until later, is https://www.timeout.com/barcelona/things-to-do/carnival-in-barcelona

In any case, as you mentioned Sitges, note it's merely a short 45' ride on a commuter train line, which on Carnival night -that'd be the famous Tuesday night crazy parade- it gets reinforced with many more trains until the wee hours as Sitges gets packed with visitors from elsewhere outside the town and beyond, all over Europe, coming specifically for this night. So this could indeed be an option! (but do expect crowds)

I am sorry not to be able to be more specific for the time being. Keep tuned to the websites I've mentioned above.

Enjoy

Wow! Enric I can not thank you enough for your time, research and suggestions! I am going to book our flight with the delayed departure and follow the sites you recommend for updates. Even if we don't find anything 'special' an extra night in your beautiful city is not a hardship! We travelled to Sitges for an overnight last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it ... However I don't think we would recognize it should we return in February!;)
