Asia Ports

We've only been to Brunei out of those and this is a working port and not walkable into town. We did hear of people getting a taxi into town and walking around. We booked a tour, not a ship's tour but can't remember who with, and it was excellent and we got to go on a speed boat through the floating town and down the river and also saw all the other landmarks. Well worth it.

We went to Brunei and Kota Kinabalu a few years back on a small ship. Brunei was along way from the port (poss about 30 miles) so we decided to do a trip as the ship's transfer was not much cheaper than the trip, (which was very good). We were told there are very few taxi's in Brunei as most people own a number of cars there (an oil rich state). We know someone who did manage to get a taxi though.

I think Kota Kinabalu was quite near to the port, but we had done the trip to the foothills of Mount Kinabalu and were glad we did as people who stayed in town were not happy as there was not much there.

Borneo is a very large island and both the other ports you have mentioned are in Borneo. You may have mis read the itinerary and thought it was another port.
