flagstone67 Posted October 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 1, 2009 My wife and I are looking at a HAL cruise out of Tampa that makes a stop in Puerto Cortes, Honduras. We are familiar with Roatan, however we are having a hard time finding any info on Puerto Cortes. Has anyone been here before?
SeaPA1 Posted October 8, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 8, 2009 Wow, I had no idea that any cruiseships stopped in Puerto Cortes. It's a MAJOR shipping port - maybe the biggest/most important in Central America. But I think it's always been just that - a cargo port, with the economy of the area built around that, not tourism. It's a pretty area - sea on one side, mountain range on the other. Don't know if there is much to do there for cruise passengers.
SeaPA1 Posted October 8, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 8, 2009 Hmmm, I edited the above but it didn't seem to take it. After thinking about it, I assume the stop at Puerto Cortes is to provide access to the Mayan Ruins in Copan. PC would be the closest port to that area of Honduras. Copan is spectacular - regarded as one of the nicest of the mayan ruin areas in Central America. It has some of the finer artwork/sculptures of all of the Mayan cities. Unless you plan a private Jet or Helicopter Copan is much to far from Puerto Cortes for a one day cruise ship stop, I belive its about 2-2.5 hour drive each way from Copan to San Pedro and Puerto Cortes is even further.
