We've been to GC twice, third time missed due to weather. Both times we visited stingray city, but we now see an excursion advertising stingray sandbar. Does anyone know anything about this and is it a truly different area? Thanks

Stingray City and Stingray Sandbar are two separate sites, about two miles apart from one another.

Stingray City is the original site. The water is about 12 to 15 feet deep.

Most of the tour boats instead go the the Stingray Sandbar. As the name implies, the water is quite shallow, around 4 feet deep, and you can stand up on a sandbar. The Stingray Sandbar is located two miles further east than Stingray City, making the sandbar a longer boat trip for the majority of tour operators who depart from the west side of the island.

To complicate matters, almost all of the tour operators will advertise their tours as going to Stingray City  even though overwhelmingly they are going to the Stingray Sandbar site. The major exception is for scuba diving tours - those all go to the original Stingray City deeper site.
