Renting a car and exploring San Gervasio

Hello, My Girlfriend and I were set to sail on Sept. 25th 2014, and we were planning on renting a car once on Cozumel. My question: Is there a dirt road leading to San Gervasio from the main, paved road? and is it safely accessed via rental car?

the road use to to be with a lot of holes but now is ok, it not paved, but is almost a smooth drive
