Airports in Istanbul

Has anyone used the SAW airport to fly within Europe after getting off a cruise? If yes, how far away is this airport from the piers? Are their shuttle services to this airport from the pier?

Both airports are far away, in opposite directions from the pier. SAW is farther from the city than IST, and it's on the Asian side (over one of the toll bridges), so transportation generally takes longer and is more expensive. But it is perfectly possible to use this airport if you find flights that are convenient for you. Any private transfer service will be happy to take to and from either airport. There is also a regular shuttle from Taksim Square, which is not far by taxi from the cruise port.

re IST departure, does anyone know if departures are especially lengthy or problematic. I've been offered VIP departure services (at an added cost, of course) and just wondered if they are necessary. Advice please?

This is a beautiful easy to navigate airport. You should not have any issues at all.

If you are flying Lufhansia out of Istanbul, the check in agents actually weighed both my carry on items (one was just a purse). They are serious about the weight of carry ons.
