NZ hotel chain "Scenic or Heartland"

Have read some reviews etc of these accommodations. They seem be in most of the places we are going like Auckland, Bay of Islands, Queenstown, etc. They are rated by NZ to be 4 star or maybe higher. Any recommendations/comparisons to US hotel chains?

 

Has anybody seen a way to save money on accommodations by booking one chain or group? Would accommodations be cheaper in NZ from a travel agent or just on your own?. We will be staying about 20 nights total on both North and South Islands before and after a cruise.

 

I reposted the former thread to make my question clearer -- some folks didn't know I am totally focused on New Zealand right now
