London Taxis and Credit Cards?

A friend has asked me if taxis in London will accept credit cards. I seem to recall this is possible, at least in some, but I really would appreciate a more definite answer from someone who has been there in recent months. Thanks in advance.

Some do, and some don't. The best thing to do is to ask the driver before you get in.

As you may know, when you hail a cab, the practice in London is to tell the driver where you're going before you get into the cab; and to pay him after you get out of the cab.

Sometimes, it doesn't make sense to do this, but that's the general practice. So it gives you a chance to ask about credit cards before you get in.

There is a pretty hefty surcharge, though, for using a credit card - typically something like 10%, IIRC.
