Carnival Excursion -Mayan Ruins Cozumel or Belize?

It's a matter of opinion, but Lamanai from Belize City are some of the best ruins, and even hailed by experts. Lamanai is a definite adventurous trek. Tulum (from Cozumel) is definitely not the nicest....it was kind of like that smaller, cheaply built ones. Altun Ha very close to Belize City is kind of the same thing, but I would rate those a step above Tulum. BUT, if you just want to see Mayan ruins, who cares?! Just go for what you feel like. Lamanai is a whole day. That will be all you do, and that isn't what a lot of people want. I have taken a few college classes on the Maya, so I'm kind of picky. Tulum and Altun Ha are still beautiful!

Also if you want to climb the ruins, you can only do that in Belize. The ones offered from Cozumel have deteriorated too much and you are not allowed to climb them any more.

On the other hand, if your ship offers Chichen Itza (I know some Carnival itineraries do), they are probably the most impressive Mayan ruins you could visit. They are world renowned and I would highly recommend. But I would definitely do the excursion through Carnival due to time constraints.
