Is formal night formal in alt restuarant

We are going to Alaska on the Diamond Princess on 9/9 and were wondering......

On the formal nights, are the alternative restaurants also formal?

The reason I ask is.... we were on Carnival Valor in June and on the 2nd formal night, we thought we would try the alternative restaurant and NOT dress formal. When we went to make reservations, they said they were also formal that night. We were dressing formal either way; restaurant or dining room.
