Renting a vehicle

Has anyone had any experience renting a vehicle in port for the day?

I understand that there is not a car rental agency in Progreso.

Depending on where you want to go, Progreso has a very good public transportation system. Colectivo/combi for around the local area and Autoprogreso runs a frequent bus to and from Merida for 26 pesos (current exhange rate 12.29 to 1) round trip. You can also rent a taxi with driver for the day. I have no idea how much that will be as I have never booked one. If you have a trip to any of the ruins in mind Autoprogreso is the way to go. Same buses and tours as the cruise line at much reduced prices.

Do they have places at the pier to easily rent for the day?

Not sure about the pier as I live here and haven't been at the end of the pier where you all arrive. But in Progreso, there is car rental office about a block in from the beach.
