Nice - train and tram

Many people are interested in "taking the train to Nice." The main train station "Nice Ville" is a good distance from the center of Nice and the Flower Market. BUT, the good news is that Nice has a wonderful tram system that will take you from the station to the tourist areas. Here is how:

The tram station is right by the train station at the corner of Ave. Thiers and Ave. Jean Medecin (when you exit the station turn left and it is right at the corner - you'll see the tram stop across the street). That is the "Gare Thiers" stop. Take the tram in the direction of "Pont Michel-Hopital Pasteur" and get out at "Place Massena" two stops from the train station or continue one more stop to "Opera-Vielle Ville" right by the Flower Market. The whole ride is less than 10 minutes and it costs 1.5 euros one way.

For the return trip, take the tram in the direction of "Henri Sappia" and get out at "Gare Thiers" just by the train station.

At peak times the tram runs every 4 minutes and no more than every 10 minutes at other times. Tickets are sold in machines by the stops. Tickets are NOT sold aboard the trams.

All that long walk from downtown to Nice Ville, actually, will take 20 -30 min of walk through this beautiful city ( from Massena Sq to railway station)... We did not use trams, just because walk there is so nice and relaxing ...

I know, long is relative. Station to Pl. Massena is a little over a mile. I love to walk, but some people might have trouble walking and prefer to use the tram...

For those who want to walk, turn left out of the station. When you see the tram tracks at the corner, turn right and follow them all the way to Place Massena.

Bring change!!! We visited in June, took the train from VF to Nice and intended to hop on the tram. Found the machine to buy tram tickets, no problem but it only took coins! We had only bills/paper cash. Maybe it was just that machine??? So we walked instead. Long walk but so much to see. Still, wish I'd had coins but would have needed 6 euros worth for all 4 of us.
