December 11th out of Galveston -

This will be our first time in Progresso and we're looking for the best beach to go to. We're not into snorkeling... just like to hang out at a nice beach with decent ammenities nearby, ie, beer and food. What do you recommend for a family of 5? Thanks.

We were in Progresso earlier this month off the Ecstasy. We took the free shuttle into Progresso and shopped at the market area then walked the 2 blocks to the beach. There were chairs and umbrellas on the beach. Several restaurants provided waiters that would bring you food and drinks. Also several massage tables lined the beach for massages if you wanted one - a lot cheaper than on the ship. This is the same beach - just down a way from the corona beach that the ship has an excursion to. This would be a more economical excursion on your own than booking through Carnival.

Like posted above just bus to town and walk the few blocks to the beach the local watering holes have tables and often a few toys for you to play on all you need to do is buy drinks and maybe lunch from them....

Beadvised NO ICE !!! eat all your food cooked!!!!!

10.00 -15.00 goes a long ways with them.. do not buy the fake Cuban Cigars....

Yep thats right. the shuttle will come off the pier, and turn left, immediately pulling to the right and dropping you off at the down town flea market thing. WHERE you get off the shuttle, RIGHT across the street, is a little hole in the wall "beer" store, where you can get goood dos XX and Sol beer for a buck. After gettin your first drink there, continue to walk down the sidewakl going the same direction the bus was facing when it drops you off. turn LEFT at your first street. you are now walking towards the beach. RIGHT before you get to the beach is an AWESOME mexican food restaurant. THERE are several that you will pass as you walk to the beach, but stay strong, say no thanks, and continue your walk until you get to the cool clean restaurant on the left..Wife and I both ordered the beef quesadillas, I drank three beers, she drank two, and we both ordered a strawberry daq and paid 15.00 bucks!! then hit the beach. P.S..this IS the SAME Corona beach they advertise for 35 pp on the ship....DONT PAY IT..do it yourself and save that money. Beer is 1-2 dollars a pop on and around the beach. Its awesome! GOOD LUCK!

The ice in restaurants and bars is usually from ice plants that have water purification systems. A few bigger restaurants may even have their own, but I wouldn't count on it. Mexicans don't want you or themselves getting sick. Notice, even the Mexicans drink bottled water. I've spent considerable time in the Yucatan, cities and rural. Never sick from drinks or food. Hope to be back there for Carnival for 10 days in Feb. Having been there for the Day of the Dead Festival, Carnival must be a real hoot.
