Help with booking hotel

Is there some place I can look to see if there are any conventions booked? I will be booking a hotel for 6 nights either before or after our cruise and want to get the best deal I can. So many hotels will not book this far out, and if they do, you might not get the best price. I don't want a convention or 2 to leave me high and dry, but I can't afford to pay any price either. I have looked to see if there's any events that are scheduled around our cruise date, but I didn't see any on the New Olreans' web sites. I am looking at the first week of October 2007 for my cruise. Any suggestions out there to help me corner a good deal if at all possible.
