  1. And if you happen to be in Honolulu on Sept 22 you can get free admission via the Smithsonian Museum free day. That day they will have special exhibits and events and yes, you ride the free shuttle bus out to Ford Island.... Check out the Smithsonian Museum web site. Several other museums will be free that day also.

  2. Still many clouds and threats of more rain as the remnants of Lane hang around over the islands. But the winds have died down a lot. I actually may go down to Waikiki and walk around today and visit the zoo animals The zoo like so many places has been closed for 3 days. I bet they miss the visitors.

  3. Oahu and Kauai has dodged the bullet is seems. The big island is still getting pounded by record rains. So is Maui. In Honolulu the sun is coming out a bit and a touch of blue sky is appearing. And Tourists are going to the boat for the sunset / dinner cruise. No cruise ships in port but the POA will probably come in tomorrow.

  4. Yes, Hawaii hoping for the best but planning for the worst. Cargo ships are going out to sea as being in port under high winds can cause damage to them. Many shelves in stores are getting rather bare now. Many attractions including Pearl Harbor are closed. I imagine cruise ships will stay out to sea and not dock anywhere. Waikiki tourist associations are helping tourists. Many plane schedules in doubt. Just hang in there and see what happens.

  5. I would buy a day pass for TheBus. $5.50. Many city buses to PH. Since the boats no longer go to the Arizona (ship) you don't have to 'get there early' to get a boat ticket. But do go and see the museum and surrounding. Plus the MO and the Bowfin and The Pacific Air Museum.

  6. The extended boat trips are very interesting. You may get to see more than you usually do on just the boat ride to the memorial and back. And get narration. Please go see it folks. So much to do in that area. The boat operators are Navy sailors and that is their job. And the Arizona is still an 'active' ship. So only the Navy can take people to it.

  7. But there is so much more to see in that area. A great USS Arizona museum, an historical movie they show, and they still take you on a boat ride in the waters around the Memorial. And some very nice grounds with memorial plaques to see.

And then you can always go see the USS Bowfin sub, and the mighty MO and the Flight Museum. Can spend a whole day in that area. Quite frankly I could spend a whole day in that Flight museum, they have many old planes to see. And a great café to eat in..... So please DO go to see all of those historical attractions.

  8. 120 earthquakes in the last 24 hours. Crater spewing out 2 foot wide rocks. Ash spewing 10,000 ft into the air. More cracks opening on roads and in the forests. Air quality is bad... Of course planes will not fly thru this ash. What masks are available in Honolulu are being shipped to the big island. I have several friends there and they are hanging in for now. With my asthma and COPD I would be long gone. And no, if I was the captain of a cruise ship I would not stop at the big island. It is what it is.....

  9. They are asking for gas masks to be sent. (Epic lava tours)

I have asthma. It isn’t mildly irritating for me.

And of course I meant in the area of the volcano and never stated otherwise.

I have asthma and COPD and there is no way I would go to the big island now. The people there are having a hard time getting the masks that actually do some protection. If/when the big explosion comes there may be bad air all over the island.

  10. Picked up the next day? Did you sleep on the bus?

We were in Kona for two weeks prior to this latest eruption. Visited the park and it was obvious a big one was coming, the caldera at Jagger overlook was overflowing with lava, something was bound to give down below.

I feel bad for the small businesses that offer activity tours but not the trinket shops selling cheap made in china souvenirs.

Actually there was not much sleeping that night. We were all so tired and unprepared to spend hours riding buses and sitting on a hotel floor.

  11. How on Earth did you get from high winds and high waves at the tender dock to canceling because of a volcano. Holy crap

Don't be silly.... I merely cited the dangers that cruise ship passengers can face in various situations.

  12. I can certainly see why ships opt out from stopping on either port on the Big Island. I remember a few years back a ship I was on tendered off Kona and people went ashore. But during the day the high tide came, and very high winds, and the waves pounding the tender dock did not allow the tenders to dock and pick us up. We waited for hours in the vicinity. Finally many buses were hired and they bused us to Hilo where they picked us up next day. Try doing that if an active volcano is going off. And if they docked in Hilo and told the passengers to stay in the Hilo area for fast departure ... well you know darn well that some will want to go off and get as close as they could to the volcano eruption area. The ship is responsible for the passengers well-being. If they scattered all over the island it would be hard to gather them up and get them on board safely. On a lava field tour a few years ago a woman somehow was left behind and searchers found her dead on the lava field the next day. So I feel the POA and other ships are playing it safe. The island is a very active and volatile place now. Respect it and the power it holds.

  13. Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that it won’t make calls in Big Isle ports this week, widening tourism losses for the hard-hit island.

NCL notified Hawaii island businesses this morning that Pride of America will not call in Hilo on Tuesday and as a result will spend the day at sea. On Wednesday, NCL said Pride of America will not call in Kona but will add an additional day in Maui and call in Lahaina instead.

  14. Ongoing earthquakes on the Big Island. Some quite strong. The news on TV shows here on Oahu keeps breaking in saying... no danger of tsunami... Madam Pele is very active now. At least 2 homes have burned down. Unknown what she will do....
