  1. If you are looking for lunch we enjoyed Cheeseburger Waikiki. I can recommend the Cheeseburger Island Style, topped with Kalua Pork, Grilled Pineapple and Hawaiian Teriyaki Sauce.

BTW Dukes is great but I would never call it "cheap eats" ;p :D

    Cheeseburger in Paradise?

  2. Done the race a few times and I gotta think even the walkers are thru town by 8:00. We just ran up from Ala Moana turned right at bishop or nearby and then head east for the next dozen or so miles so Honolulu itself will be pretty open and the finish is on the east end of Waikiki at kapiolani Park. Yet It’s true heading west or north is likely a good idea.

And it is fun to watch the racers come in,. Especially those who take 7 and 8 and 9 and more hours to finish;. They fall over the finish line. Downtown and Waikiki (except for Kapiolani park area) OK.

  3. You can go to their web site and check out the race course. From Ala Moana - thru downtown then thru Waikiki - down to Kahala - then to Hawaii Kai then back to Waikiki. I have done it several times - and yes it will cause some (lots in some places) traffic prob. If you go the other way - like to Arizona Memorial or the North SHore you will be OK. About 20,000 do the race and some take 10 hours to finish....

  4. "kinda close?" Honolulu's cross town traffic can often approach L.A. commute standards.

Agree. It is a one lane road (each way) to the PCC and if there is an accident or telephone pole down or any other kind of traffic problem you would miss your ship............ I would not try to go there at night/evening.

Traffic very dicey here now. Worst traffic at certain times of day. And worst roads in any state.

  5. And just google "thebus Honolulu" and check out their web site. Note that the times are different for weekday and Saturday and Sunday bus times. Lots of tourist info on their web site.

  6. Yes. Make sure you have a $5 bill or $10 for two people/passes and you buy it from the bus driver. You can use it all day and evening. The bus has a great web site where you can see all the info about the routes and the times and which buses go to which places. I live here and I use it. Heck of a lot cheaper than taxis or tours. Nice thing about it is if you see a store or a place you want to visit you can jump off and then board the next bus coming by.

  7. Also if you are there during the week (Mon - Fri) there is a great Honolulu Police history museum in the main Police building - walkable from the palace in 10 minutes. And in the old Honolulu Justice building is a small museum about Hawaii Under Martial Law in WWII .... Both museums are free.

  8. You can get to Pearl Harbor on the city bus ($5 bus pass). I advise you to go ASAP and when you get to Pearl Harbor go to the desk and get your free boat ticket. Then check out the excellent museum while you wait for your boat. Also no bags are allowed but you can check them for a couple of $$$. You do not need a pricey tour to go to Pearl Harbor. There are also 3 other attractions that are privately operated and you must pay for them. The WWII submarine , the Mighty Mo Battleship and the Pacific Aviation Museum - called one of the top aviation musuems in the US. And they have a great café to get lunch.

  9. For Honolulu there is a city bus service on the main road from the dock. A $5 daily pass is available and you can go to Ala Moana or Waikiki. I recommend Wal-Mart and Target as the stores in ALa Moana are very expensive now.

  10. Try the Aloha Stadium Flea Market/Swap Meet instead. We found the prices to be lower and the sellers more amenable to haggling over the price. Not much shade, so be prepared with a hat or small umbrella and a big bottle of water.

Beware some of the food products there like chocolates. My friend got some boxes and they had bugs in them... Were really old.

  11. Aloha. As of a year or so ago you must make reservations thru the official Pearl Harbor web site to get the small boat to the Arizona memorial. The crowds have gotten so bad that reservations are necessary. (PS - I live in Hawaii and have to do the same). No more just going to PH and getting a free ticket. The tickets are still free but you must book a day / time and show up on time.
