  1. We went last January. We hired a taxi to take us to Sting Ray City. We had some time to kill before our reservation, so he took us by a nice beach for a bit on the way. Then it was off to SRC. He then dropped us at Nelsons's Dockyard where we spent some time. We took the city bus back to the port.

  2. There were like 3 ships in port when we arrived. We went to the left, to a stop right before the pier stop. Traffic was crazy with hardly any movement. We waited 10-15 minutes and only ever saw a national park bus, which hardly made any progress towards us. We gave up and had a nice walk instead.

  3. We just came off the Anthem OTS with its evening in San Juan. After the El Morro fort closed, we were heading back to the ship, looking for a quiet place for a drink. We found a nice little place with a $5 all day happy hour. Nothing fancy, just a place where the locals seemed to hang. Sign outside said "birra & empanadas" and "Empanadas al Horno" located across the street from 153 Calle de Cruz. Was a quick walk back to the pier after. Enjoy!

  4. We had a wonderful time on this excursion. My DH was a grinder and I was a winch wench. We drew the Stars and Stripes and beat True North.

Check out my photos for an idea of what it was like.

If you're America's Cup fans, head from Boston down to Newport RI. There are options there for rides (though not races) on boats like Intrepid.

  5. DW & I haven't cruised in 5 years, but on our last cruise we stopped in St Martin & took the 12 Metre America's Cup Challenge & LOVED IT!!! We will be returning to the "high seas" soon and would like a bit if info: which of the 12 metre yachts remain in St Thomas & which have moved to Cozumel? Is it still a great "ride"?

The "REAL" Stars & Strips and True North raced in St Martin last month. We raced on True North vs another S&S in Cozumel 2 years ago. Don't know of any in St Thomas as of a year ago. Sailed a third S&S (not raced) from Hilton Head a year ago. Lots of options too if you go to Newport RI - I got to steer Intrepid back in to harbor - extremely cool for America's Cup fans.

  6. It's your call.

It will take 20-30 minutes to get to Maho, And you need a solid hour for your return. Traffic getting back can be slow. That doesn't leave much time there.

We are doing the same thing on carnival but our sailing ends at 12 noon.

We did the mid-day A Cup Challenge (only one our ship (Anthem OTS)) would allow) and wanted to do Maho after that. We were at the bus stop waiting for the Maho bus when a local advised "don't go" as the traffic coming back is slow and might not make it. Next trip. sigh....

  7. Do you mean the America's Cup racing?

Since those are ship sponsored tours, it would depend on the time of your sail.

An early sail, and you might have some time. Anything mid day or later, the answer would be no, unless you grabbed a taxi first off the ship and headed to Orient Beach and then left there an hour or more before the AC tour starts. either way not much time at Orient to really make it worth while, IMO.

We did the mid-day America's Cup and wanted to go from there to Maho beach. A local told us "don't go" as the traffic coming back to town was bad at that time of day. So we will save Maho for our next trip.

  8. We've booked a car with Hertz but other than walking the 2km to their location, don't know how to get there. Any ideas? Obviously a cab would be an option. Bus? Their location is CAP Southwell Industrial Park.

Here I am, back at home and responding to my own post. The walk was about 20 minutes and was easy to find on the coastal road, No issues with the car and when we returned it, they gave us a ride back to the ship. Total cost was $79 including the driving permit, but plus gas. Driving on the left was interesting (at least the car was RHD). Roads were good but signage was poor.

  9. Does anyone have any suggestions for tour guides on Martinique? I emailed the woman at Karambole but it's already booked for our day in port, so I need to find someone else.

We arrived in Martinique on the Anthem OTS 2 weeks ago. Note that here there we no hordes of tour operators/taxi drivers - just buses for pre-booked tours.

We found a red vest guy on the street (the official info guys) who directed us to an ATM. If you leave the pier and go to the right and walk about 2-3 blocks to the corner just before the park and turn left to head inland. On that first block are several banks with ATMs. We found one that had the ATM inside and used it to get 100 euros.

The same red-vest guy advised us to return to the taxi stand by the pier and find the guy with the blue vest. We did that. We said we wanted a tour of the northern part of the island. He hooked us up with 5 others whose RCI excursion had been cancelled due to lack of interest. Within minutes we were on our way with a 4-hour tour that included stops at the Sacred Heart church, Alma River/rainforest and DePaz distillery. The driver spoke good English (and french). This is important and cannot be assumed. We were stopped viewing Mt Pele and a large tour bus stopped next to us. One of the riders asked us what mountain we were looking at as their guide did not speak English!

It cost us 80 euros (the others paid $100/couple) for the 2 of us. In retrospect, I wish we could have upped it to 6 hours, but it was great nevertheless. I wish too we'd gotten more euros to spend in town. Bottom line: use the officials in the red and blue vests!

  10. I'm sailing on the Anthem of the Seas in a few weeks. I'm not a "regular" RCI cruiser. While I enjoy many of the activities offered, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the Solarium, I also like some quiet time with a book, but not necessarily in my cabin.

Does anyone have some advice about where on the ship I might find a quieter space, probably during the day?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

If you want a quiet places outside, check out the very back of the Windjammer. Not during mealtime, obviously. Also the lifeboat deck is quiet.

  11. While in the Grand Turk Bahamas I had rented a snorkel set from one of the shops on the beach. The shop had given me a snorkel mask that had either a magnifying aspect to it or somehow made things easily visible without wearing my glasses, I'm not sure, but they were specifically for people who wore glasses. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could purchase a snorkel set like this? or what others recommend for people with glasses.

I ordered a prescription mask when I got SCUBA certified. Works great. My wife is nearly blind without her glasses and discovered that she couldn't see much when snorkeling either. So I got her a prescription mask too from my instructors shop. It's a TUSA M-212 and ran about $130. You will need the prescription to order.

Prescription goggles are available too. I swim a lot and have had a few pairs. You get them like reading glasses (mine is -2.5). Cost me about $12 at SwimOutlet.

  12. Hello,

We will be docking in St.Kitts in a few weeks, and originally planned on visiting a beach for the day, but after talking with those I am cruising with, we are somewhat interested in taking an island tour. We are hesitant to book with Carnival, as excursions start at $60 a person, and in other ports like San Juan I've seen tours offered for $15 for an hour or so, $30 for around 3. I always thought these were good deals, and have never taken anyone up on them. Are there any operators like this in St.Kitts near the port? What will we see on the tour, about how long are they, and what is the price range? You you think any of them make stops at beaches or could possibly drop us off somewhere, no pickup?

Thanks so much for any help!

I looked into tour options. For what I wanted, Javin looked the best, but he was booked for that day. Other operators I looked at were Duke of Earl Adventures, Greg's Safaris and Thenford Gray Tours. I am now planning to rent a car - about $60 plus the local license. Avis was a little closer to the port, but Hertz was cheapest. I could not get good info on local car rental agencies.
