  1. We did pretty much what was described and it worked well.

Getting off the ship there were a LOT of locals who wanted to "help" us. No one could seem to believe we wanted the bus instead of a taxi! We nicely said no to them all, but one guy persisted and kept walking with us. On the advice of a non-local shopkeeper, we had him accompany us to the bus stop in exchange for a few dollar tip. We likely would have missed the left turn to the bus stop without him. Got the van - US$2 fare to West End Village. Got off at the little roundabout. There was a dock there with a water taxi waiting for 2 more passengers. We made sure the driver knew we wanted to go to Infinity Bay. About 4 stops and US$3 later were there - this is the end of the beach. Got off the boat and walked past Infinity Bay and Grand Roatan Resort to the end of the beach, flopped down and enjoyed the day. Snorkeling was excellent, though we never saw the starfish. We had a drink at Grand Roatan: Mai Tai and a Pina Colada for US$14 including tax and tip. Lots of folks will stop and try to sell you stuff. My wife bought a bracelet ($8) and some mango ($1).

End of the day, we reversed the process and were let off the bus at the end of line, about a block from where we were picked up. Then we walked back to the ship. Had a great day and was quite the adventure. Go Local!

  2. We just returned. We contacted "Lamanai Belize Tours" when another group fell through only 3 days before sailing. We were met at the port, got on a van with 6 others and drove an hour to the boat. Got on the boat and had an exciting river ride for almost an hour to the ruins. We beat the other tours so had the place to ourselves for a while. Had a hour plus at the ruins which were cool. The view from on top was terrific! Unlike other ruins we'd seen, these were in the jungle which was also cool. We heard and saw howler monkeys (loud!) on the walk back to the boat. Took the boat back to shore for a quick lunch - chicken, bean and rice and slaw (made by mom). Then got back in the van for the ride back to Belize City, arriving back in plenty time to get the tender. Overall an great day.

Recommendations: bring bug spray - we got bit a couple times on our feet while walking among the ruins. Also, get on the FIRST tender off the ship. We were first in line to get tender tickets, but were that last of the tour group to arrive on shore. The earlier arrivals told the cruise ship folks they had a long tour and needed to get off early and were put in the group with the line's excursions - there was room.

This is a family business so you can be sure that the $75 you spend will stay local. Elio promised to get us to the ship on time, or they'd drive us to the next port! Email communication was excellent before the cruise.

  3. I read all the reviews and did my research and decided to use SNAP parking near the Newark airport. I contacted them for any cruise parking peculiarities. They replied that due to delays on the Bayonne Bridge, that they no longer service the Bayonne cruise pier. By the time I found this out, the Yankee Trails bus from Albany was full. I parked at the pier ($17/day). While expensive, it was VERY convenient. We schlepped our bags maybe 100 yards each way, no waiting for a bus. We parked our car where we wanted and kept our keys. We were in and out very easily.
