  1. I did just the opposite back in the days before anytime dining. Night 1, we were seated with a couple who were prolific complainers. Plus they were cruise braggarts, which made them even more annoying. When they got around to asking what I do for a living, I told them I was on parole after a long prison term and that my doctor recommend a cruise to treat my violent tendencies.

I thought my wife was going to kill me but it worked. They requested a table change. :D

You are my favorite person, brilliant!

  2. LOVE this thread :) I am sober and in recovery from drugs and alcohol. I have not drank/used since August 5, 2008 .... however, I am now "addicted" to cruising, LOL!

I have four cruises booked and will book #5 in 62 days when I board the Conquest. Lucky for me a get a lot of vacation time (5 weeks a year) and buy those Carnival gift cards for 10% OFF so it's easier to cruise often.

I have never felt "pressured" to drink by anyone on a cruise ship. I also find plenty to do in order to have fun without drinking ... I love the non-alcoholic drinks ... but typically I bring a dozen energy drinks and enjoy those for most of the cruise cause it saves a ton of money ...

In all my cruises, I have never found anyone else in recovery to have a "friends of Bill W" meeting ... even tho they list them every day, no one ever shows up, lol --- guess they are too busy finding "non alcoholic" things to do!

...but I would welcome a meeting sometime - Although my solution is to cruise with my friends from recovery anyway, so we turn the whole cruise into a "meeting"

It certainly does not bother me what other people are doing ... and contrary to what some people say, I don't see "everyone" as being "always hammered" on Carnival cruises, and reading all the comments here before mine solidifies that ...

So don't worry, you will have a GRAND time on Carnival and find PLENTY to do without any need to drink alcohol :)

    Cheers!

Happy Birthday! I've been lucky and have always been able to have 1 other person show up for a meeting on the ship. I'll be on the Vista for the 6/3/17 and 6/11/17 sailings, join me for a meeting! Take care and God Bless.

  3. I really hope there's a sub forum for Horizon.

We won't be able to do MV but will probably be on the first cruise in June after sons graduation.

I hope there are more than 1 Havana Cabana suites that sleep 4 people.

Where do you want the first season to sail? We're hoping for British Isles or Baltic.

  4. I haven't had a drink in almost 3 years and have been on 3 cruises in that time. I never felt pressured to buy a drink from anyone and had more fun on those 3 cruises than the first 2 when I was still drinking. Enjoy your cruise, you'll have a fantastic time!

  5. So we took a break from Carnival a few years back primarily because we felt the service in the MDR stunk when the rolled out their team waitstaff concept and the entertainment (especially in the public areas) was next to non existent and then playlist came out and we didn't like the concept (but had not ever seen it).

Well playlist wasn't terrible (not ice shows or even close to what RCCL does in the main show room but better than we expected). There was more live entertainment about (one man bands instead of kareokke) and the kinks of the team waitstaff have been worked out.

More significantly, this cruise amplified the things Royal has been doing lately that tick me off. Carnival had much better bar service and casinos and better food especially at the buffets.

We still love RCCL's ships and the entertainment is better, but if Breeze Cruise was a little cheaper out of Galveston than Liberty, we'd definitely consider it.

We haven't been on RCCL yet, (first is next October on Liberty), but just did the new Carnival Vista in the Mediterranean and it was excellent! Our first 4 cruises were on Disney and didn't think any other cruise line could touch the caliber of their stage shows. One show on Vista, "Flick," not only touched it but surpassed all the shows on Disney. It was nothing short of amazing.

We absolutely loved the Vista, have 2 booked on her for 2017, then Liberty later in the year and will be booking Vista's sister, Horizon, for her inaugural year in 2018.

  6. I just started reading and had to comment on your Venice pictures, they are absolutely amazing! They remind me of some I saw on the Disney Fantasy back in 2013. The photographer put them on sheet metal with a high gloss finish and I just loved them. They were selling for about $700 so I didn't buy any, but I recently found out Costco will finish your pics that way for way cheaper, you should look into it.

Loving the trip report and will finish reading it tomorrow.

  7. I've done a couple searches and can't find the answer so sorry to bother you all but I have to ask. Are there typically chicken strips/nuggets available at Lido Marketplace? We were on the Vista in June and were surprised there weren't any. I'm hoping it was just a European thing and for Caribbean sailings they will be there. We are going on a southern Caribbean next June on the Vista and I realize the Vista hasn't been to the Caribbean yet so there is no way to know for sure, but was checking about other ships as well. Also, what about Mac and Cheese on the buffet, is that normally there?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

  8. Thank you all for your input.

When do you find out the order that you'll be doing the restaurants?

I'm pretty sure that we're going to stick with our plan of just doing the three MDRs.

You'll find out when you get your Key to the World card, it will have your dining rotation on it.

Good call on hitting all 3 MDR's, we've spent 21 total nights on DCL and have never felt the need to miss the MDR once. Be sure to order the "Black Truffle Pasta Purseittes" for your appetizer, when in Animators Palate, they are amazing! I usually order them for my main course as well.

  9. Thank you elliair! Wow, the comments on my post are so rude! SO I guess because I didn't like my carnival cruise I am lying about my experience? How rude of you folks that "Love" carnival to act this way because my experience was terrible! We each have our own opinions about a cruise and your rude comments just shows the type of person(s) you are.

I said our room steward was the nicest but the other crew were not very friendly as I stated. Yes I do believe they had bed bugs in my room because I itched every night and then ended up with a bite that wasn't there before going to bed. In my opinion the food sucked with the exception of those places I did eat that was decent food.

Again, too each there own but I will stick with Royal!

I'm sorry to read you didn't enjoy your cruise, it's a bummer when you anticipate a vacation and it doesn't live up to your expectations.

However, before you start accusations of food poisoning and bed bugs, I urge you to think about 2 things. If your husbands illness was a result of food poisoning, there would have been many more instances and these boards would be lit up with those posts.

Also, did it ever occur to you that you may have had an allergic reaction of some kind, to the detergent used on the ship? If there were bed bugs, you would have had a lot more than 1 bite after the week. Once again, if this was a wide spread problem, these boards would be lit up.

We've enjoyed 4 great Disney cruises and just finished our first Carnival cruise. We actually enjoyed it more than we expected. We knew it was going to be different than our Disney cruises and we were right, not better or worse, just different.

I hope your next cruise meets your expectations.

  10. Another thread had a review of the Vista and mentioned that tea time wasn't offered as it had always been on other ships.

The Vista is in port almost everyday in the Mediterranean right now, there's been very few sea days. Also, not everything was up and running from the get go, there are things open now on the Vista that weren't on our 6/3 cruise.

  11. So we are Carnival newbies. Thought we would do RCCL but Vista has a great southern itinerary for June 2017. I have a good idea about the rooms. unfortunately Havana is sold out. I am trying to get a handle on the evening entertainment options.

When I look thru the deck plans the only theater I see is the liquid lounge. It does not look large enough for nightly shows. What kind of evening entertainment options does Vista have? Does it have any Broadway style shows? Do these shows require reservations?

Any tips for a RCCl and NCL cruiser trying out Carnival. What requires advanced reservations? How much is the Italian restaurant and the steak restaurant. Any dinning plans?

    Thank you

We were on the Vista on 6/3, our first CCL cruise after 4 Disney cruises. Disney has some of the best shows on the sea but Vista has "Flick" and it blew me away!!! Absolutely amazing show by the entire cast, truly spectacular. We also enjoyed, Hasbro the Game Show, there was one night with Cuban themed song and dance which was good but not great, another night had a Rock themed show which was really good but unfortunately was the night after Flick so it just wasn't quite as good for me.

I was pleasantly surprised by the evening entertainment.

We didn't do any pay restaurants but were very happy with Guys, the pizza and the Italian place for lunch. During lunch the Italian place is a free pasta bar with some great offerings, we ate there 3 times on our 8 night cruise. Also, when the Vista gets stateside a new Guy's BBQ place will be joining the line up. We were actually very happy with the food offerings on Vista with the exception of the Lido buffet. I thought they were pretty limited and was very surprised there were no chicken strips or Mac and Cheese. I'm hoping those will be added stateside also! I do have to give major Kudus to the Lido fir the homemade ice cream they serve at lunch, that stuff rocks! This isn't the 24 hour soft serve in the machines, it's good quality, churned ice cream, very much like frozen custard. They had 2 flavors daily and it's only served at lunch, don't miss it!

We'll be on 6/3/17, 8 night Southern Caribbean cruise next year. We greatly enjoyed the Vista. Here is a link to my review I posted on a Disney cruise board, there are lots of comparisons to the way Disney does things but there's also tons of pictures. It's not a trip report with info on the ports so you won't have to skip through that kind of stuff, it's strictly a review of Vista,

  12. We were midship on deck 8 in June and loved it, very quiet floor with very little foot traffic. We're on deck 8 aft next June again on the Vista. We like it there because we like to take the stairs and it's a easy to go where we need to go from deck 8. The only time it's a bit of a hike is when returning to the ship on deck 1 in ports, I started getting tired around deck 6.

  13. Just as title really. Was looking forward to watching this but I haven't seen it mentioned in any reviews and I've looked at a few fun times and can't see it listed.

We enjoyed it on the 6/3 cruise, I think it was night 3. Matt did an excellent job emceeing it, he's a great CD.

  14. We recently finished our first Carnival cruise, (8 night Mediterranean on the Vista), our 4 previous cruises were all on Disney, (Dream, 2 on Fantasy and 1 on the Wonder). We were a little skeptical to try Carnival as well, based on the rumors we've heard as well. We had a fantastic time on an amazing ship, with a great crew. We've another Vista booked for 2017 and will probably be on Vista II in summer 2018. Here is a link to the review I wrote http://www.disboards.com/threads/thoughts-on-the-new-carnival-vista.3521334/

It is written from the perspective of how the Vista compares to DCL.
