  1. Greetings,

There is a pretty high possibility I could miss the ship (Carnival Valor 3/27). I am willing to take the risk, and looking at backup plans now to catch up with the rest of the family who would NOT miss the ship.

    Question for the informed:

Not seeing an easy way to catch up in Grand Turk which is the first port of call. (Any suggestions for near airports and/or ferry options?)

SanJuan is 2nd port of call, and looks easy. Willing to throw an award ticket as insurance that I could get an affordable fight. Are there any Jones Rule/Passenger rules that would come into play if I catch the ship is San Juan?

I am calling carnival, but know they have given bad info in the past. Just trying to hedge all bets.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    Do you have a passport?

And yes there are certain conditions that affect the Passenger Services Act (not Jones, as that pertains to cargo).

People miss ships all the time. Just not sure what happens if you go it alone. Gotta assume some pier agent always gets involved with people legitimately missing the ship.

  2. This is what happens when people complain.

Carnival gave a coupon for a free beverage, however, they limited the time frame for when the beverage was available.

People complained about the restriction, saying Carnival should allow the coupon to be used anytime at any bar. Carnival has taken the coupon away, one would think there should be nothing to complain about now.

Look at any coupon, there are terms / restrictions printed on them.

There are aspects of this I don't get. Those that think they are entitled are complaining about a free $8 drink, what is basically a very small percentage of money they spend to vacation. I'll never get it.

This is confusing. It leads me to believe the new cruiser doesn't know how to redeem the coupon, and discontinuing it, and believing the experienced cruiser knows how to redeem it, and will continue to receive it, and here's a water as well.

Were they actually keeping track as to who was complaining about it, or is using that as a put forward falsehood as to why they did it.

  3. Thank Goodness for DVR's. I would have never known it was a cruise commercial till the end. I backed it up, scratched my head, and watched the rest of the game and commercials.

Have to say it sits on the bottom of my list of memorable commercials. It was missing something crucial to my fantasy viewing; Caribbean blue waters.
  4. You can call DCL and request a specific rotation. Or you can request something like "Animator's Palate on Pirate night". Whatever works for you.

One note, it's just a request, not guaranteed, you won't know until you check in at the port whether you got it or not.

Also, when making dining requests it's best to have only one. If you request two different things, it's possible that they can't grant both requests and will honor neither, since they don't know what's more important to you. For example, they might be able to place you on the rotation you want, but there are no booths available for the night you are in there. Or vice versa, a booth might be available, but not on the rotation you want.

Personally, about the booths, if there are more than 3 of you, I'd recommend skipping it.

Does that mean there's a way to avoid Parrot Cay. We find that venue weak in food choices.

  5. We're doing 4 night Bahama cruise on the dream that departs on a Monday. We're flying in Friday afternoon.

    Friday-Fly in

    Sat-Magic Kingdom

Sun-Head to port to hang out at hotel OR Different Disney park?

    Monday-depart on cruise

We don't have much for plans in Nassau-may not even get off the ship. Traveling with hubby and 2 kids 6 and 8.

I don't want to plan too much but want to get the most out of it:) Thanks for your opinions.

We found the cruise part was relaxing enough to recover from the parks. No break needed in between.

  6. Hi all,

Just wondering if there was anyone else out there who had their cruise ruined due to bad weather. Tomorrow we were scheduled for a cruise on the disney dream but instead will not get to go on vacation at all due to this blizzard in chicago. Airports are closed today and tomorrow which means I have no shot at trying to jump on a flight tomorrow to catch the boat before it leaves. The airline didn't cancel the flight until 3 hours before taking off. So we lost any shot of driving down to Orlando through this blizzard. After talking to Disney, since I purchased the insurance I will get 75% off what I paid back minus the cost of insurance. Adding up the costs for my prepaid parking, the hotel, and transportation to the port, and the 25% money lost on the cruise I'm out around $1,000 and not even getting to go on any type of vacation. Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed, but mostly for my child who won't get to see Mickey Mouse in person for the first time. Just wondering if anyone else had a horror story like this or any tips that may alleviate being out so much money. I thought purchasing cruise insurance would protect against weather, but after reading through the fine print it only protects you 100% from medical emergency. Now I know for the future, maybe try to see if there is a better type of insurance for traveling.

Not in Disney, but on a competing line, we got stuck in the airport for a blizzard. Our insurance didn't pay for a replacement cruise; just all expenses to attempt to catch up with the ship. Turns out the best we could have done was catch up with it 6 days into the cruise. We gave it our best shot.

We were thrilled when the line offered us a replacement cruise with a choice of 4 sailings on a newer better ship. It was a cruise to remember. And the insurance did pay for all food and accommodations between home and that airport. It did take us 2 days to get home.

  7. Am I the only one that thinks $8,000 plus for a cruise for a family of four is outrageous? Just did a quick look for the Caribbean in July 2015! Wow!

Perhaps you book these years in advance so you have time to take out a second mortgage; someone, please enlighten me.

    Thank you in advance.

We just adjusted our sail dates and planned to adjust accommodations to do it, but the sail date cruising off season allowed us to pay the same as we would have in another line at on on season rate.

We also found that many don't add together their fare and on board charges when comparing two lines.

  8. Just booked our 1st Disney cruise, 3 days on Dream. We've taken 10 past cruises on Rccl & Carnival. Anxious to find out what all the fuss is about with DCL & why the cost is so much more. Very excited!!!!

When we finally tried Disney, it was part of a land sea package, without food on the land portion.

What stuck us first was the ease we encountered checking is to the land, as well as the transport and embarkation at the port.

And walking onto that ship, being announced, with visual beauty all around. Making our way to the stateroom, we were thrilled with our accommodations.

The service all around was unmatched to what we had ever had on our previous cruises. The only let down was the food, basically the choices. It wasn't that it was bad or anything, it was just that we expected more.

Repeated the same thing about 18 months later, and it was simply more of the same, so we felt we had been there done that, except with a group we had brought along.
