    What city is this?

Freedom is in San Juan in June.

Actually, $800 for 3 rooms for 6 people in San Juan, that doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me. But I agree, don’t ever bother booking a hotel through the cruise line. You’ll get a better deal on your own.

They used to give an extra cruise point for booking hotels through them, not sure if they still do that, but that might be the only benefit if they do.

  2. Not always. They just told us to cover the plate with another plate. Weird, and it's the first time that's ever happened, but that's what we were told on the Allure last week. We've been given plate covers (with the hole in the top like the dining room uses) on previous cruises, and plastic wrap on another cruise. We now bring ziploc bags to keep a few cookies in the room (they tend to stop making the sugar free chocolate chip cookies toward the end of the cruise so we hoard a few to get us through) :)

Sugar free chocolate chip cookies? Gross, what’s the point. [emoji21]

That sucks. For some reason I have always felt like the Southern route would be safer from being taken over by charters because they are more expensive to get to (airfare and time to travel to Puerto Rico). This particular charter says it’s for ADP, which is a payroll company....fun [emoji851]

  4. I am surprised. Their website says they are open 7 Days a week. And they are consolidators.

Hmmm. Maybe they are on more than one island. I tried to book for Curacao and there was a big “error” message that they were closed that day along with a calendar that showed they were only open 3 days a week.

  5. Ugh, every time we go on a cruise we laugh because we get to a port and see a big advertisement for Coors Light. They make Coors Light 30 minutes from my house.

Besides, no self respecting Coloradan beer drinker drinks that anyway. We have so many craft breweries out here that we’ve all become major beer snobs. From my experience, there is no good craft beer on board, nor at any of the ports. Any brand that can be bought nationally doesn’t really count as “craft.”

I wish they’d let us bring on a growler or a case of beer instead of wine.

  6. Well, I certainly agree with you and L. However, you haven't: "... made an exchange of money for the use of the ship as it is advertised." Read the cruise contract.

The cruise line only promises that the ship will leave from somewhere, go somewhere else, and return you to another location that may or may not be the departure point. The cruise contract makes it quite clear that they do not promise those things that are "advertised". For example, the cruise line does not promise you that you can have dinner in the MDR. If you can get a sandwich at the buffet, the cruise line has fulfilled it's contract. The cruise line does not promise you a seat in the theater. It doesn't even promise that there will be a show there.

Ah, point taken. You’re right, and in that case, RC unfortunately doesn’t have to offer any compromise to the other passengers. I would be pretty irritated though if venues I wanted to use were made exclusive to some other group, though I think I would have to be inconvenienced pretty heavily before it made me really mad. I tend to go with the flow and am pretty flexible when things don’t go ”my way,” but I would definitely prefer to know ahead of time and would likely avoid any cruise I knew was a charter that would be taking over and closing down venues.

  7. GOOGLE. IE:

"Freedom of the Seas January 22, 2018 group charter"

    Good idea, thanks.

I agree with LMaxwell that there should be a threshold where if a charter will affect the ability to use venues and see shows, people should be advised and/or compensated with an opportunity to cancel, or have part of their cruise fare reduced or returned. They made an exchange of money for the use of the ship as it is advertised. If they shut down the venues and only let a select group of people use areas that were advertised for everyone, that is not a fair business deal.

  8. I opened this thread purely to see how many people said to leave the baby home [emoji23] Surprised not to see that (yet).

When we took our first cruise, my child had turned 2 the week before, so not as little as yours, but with similar needs as far as the ship is concerned.

Personally, I did not enjoy it. I mean, it was vacation, so in that sense, I was happy to be on vacation, but it was not a relaxing one and I would never do that again with a kid under the age of 4 or 5.

We were not able to use any of the free kids services, and I was not willing to pay additional fees for babysitting after having paid $1800 for the cruise/air for her. Kids club would not allow kids in diapers, and not 100% potty trained.

Also not allowed to use the pool. That was really difficult, since she loved using the pool at home and didn’t understand why she wasn’t allowed on the ship (won’t be an issue for a 7month Old).

While we traveled with family, including a grandma, they did NOT want to spend their vacation babysitting, so I had zero help, and spent a lot of time in the room by myself for nap time.

Dinners were a couple hours long and while she actually really liked the dinners because the waiters constantly brought her new food to try, she had a hard time sitting still for that long and kept wanting to get up and run around (also won’t be an issue for a 7mo Old). I dreaded dinner every night because all the families wanted to eat in the dining room, but I was the only one with a small child that I had to entertain and teach to sit in a chair for 2 hours at a time. My other option would have been to eat in the buffet by ourselves; in hindsight I should have done that and I would have enjoyed it more.

I never went to a show on that trip (though the rest of the family did), I never sat at a bar to have a drink (I’m not really a drinker anyway, but do like to socialize and hang out with other adults in the lounge/bar settings), couldn’t gamble in the casino, and had to come back to the ship early on port days.

I think it would be a lot easier to do with a 7month Old; they’re a lot more like carrying around a big heavy purse that needs to eat every now and then, but a toddler, no way would I ever do that again. NOT fun.

  9. I bought an umbrella stroller for traveling, and took it on our first cruise. It was easy to transport; they gate check it on the plane (you drop it off as you walk into the plane and they put it back there when you get off at your destination). It is light, and takes up very little space.

Half my pictures from that cruise are of my toddler sleeping in that stroller at various photo stops in ports. I don’t think you should even consider NOT bringing one. Otherwise you’ll have to head back to the ship every time your kid falls asleep.
