  2. This will be a quick review of our Magic cruise. On this cruise it was me and my 83 year old father. This was my 5th Carnival cruise. I have been on the Conquest (twice), Glory and the Dream. I also went on one NCL cruise last year. I booked this back in July on a pack and play rate, but due to medical issues, it wasn't until the Thursday before the cruise that we knew we were going to be able to go. Thanksgiving night (after I got to eat!) I came down with acute appendicitis and had to have an appendectomy the following day. I was cleared by my surgeon the Thursday before the cruise! YAY! Oh, wait........Dad then fell and hurt his hip the week before the cruise! But I had already reserved a scooter through special needs at sea so he was good!

We left home (northwest Arkansas) on Friday after I got off work so we could take our time getting to Galveston. It is about a total of 11 hours on the road. A long time for my dad when his hip and leg hurt. We stayed to first night in Sherman, Texas at a Super 8. Nothing fancy but all we needed was a bed and coffee in the morning. Stayed the second night (before cruise) in League City at another Super 8.

The next morning (cruise day!!!) it was raining. And hard. And it kept raining! I dropped the luggage off at the pier with the porters. The porter told me to drop my dad off up closer to the terminal but we couldn't get in there so we just went to the parking lot. Took a wrong turn (oops) but managed to get to Parking lot B at about 10:15 am. Grabbed a shuttle (it came right to the truck). I was soaking wet by this time. Dad sat in the truck while I got our carryon's out so he was fairly dry. Got to the terminal about 10:30 am. People were being led to the right area and there was plenty of signs.

Dad wanted a wheelchair so we had to wait for one. I had purchased FTTF so we could get to the cabin right away. We were taken through security, where they took every single soda out of the case and inspected it. We were deposited in what I call the wheelchair section. It was so crowded! This is where I got very frustrated. When it was time to board they boarded the Diamonds, Plats, wedding parties and FTTF then disabled/wheelchairs, but several of the wheelchair folks had a lot (at least 20) people in their party and they were all allowed to board with them. It made for a very long boarding process for those folks that were walking but had canes or walkers. Just a crazy boarding process. I didn't mind but I felt bad for some of the other folks.

We boarded and went right to our cabin, cove balcony #2365. This is my second cove and if I were to sail on the Dream, Magic or Breeze I would get another. I love being close to the water. This cabin was right next to the midship elevators but very noisy at night. Not enough to ruin the cruise but I probably wouldn't pick this cabin again.

Dad's scooter was waiting for him. YAY! We went and got something to eat at the lido. Food was hot and there was plenty to choose from.

Muster was painless just long as usual. After that it was casino time. We spend a lot of time in the casino on cruises. We did pretty well at first then it kinda died for a while. I already had my drink card from earning 5000 points on my previous cruise. I didn't know that until Felipe, one of the casino hosts, came up and gave it to me. Learn something new everyday!!

The ports on this cruise were Cozumel, Mohogany Bay and Belize. Due to my dad's health and me still recovering from surgery we didn't do any excursions. We stayed on ship for all three ports, although I did get off to go into the port shops in Cozumel and Mahogany Bay to buy gifts and such. It was so hot in Mohogany Bay I couldn't wait to get back to the air conditioning!! I'm such a wuss!

We had anytime dining in the Northern Lights dining room deck 3. We only had to wait 1 night with a pager. The rest of the time we had no wait. We usually went around 7:30 to 8:00 pm. We had great waiters every time we were there. My dad is also hard of hearing (refuses to get a hearing aid, UGG!) so it was frustrating that he couldn't hear or understand some of the waiters. Food was hot every single meal! Only a couple of the dishes I ate were just so-so on flavor. One was a fish dish from the port of call menu. It wasn't bad just kinda blah. American table was new to us and I really liked it. We are not fancy people so the lack of tablecloths didn't matter. We always had bread and water on the table. We only went to one of the elegant nights because I didn't want to change clothes on the second one so we ate in the Lido that night. The casino comped us a meal in Cucina del Capitano. Very good!!! I had chicken Parmesan and dad had a steak. We both really enjoyed it. We had the sea day brunch one day. Very good. I had an omelet and dad had ham and eggs. We usually ate in the Lido for breakfast and or lunch. I have no complaints on the food on this cruise!

I never saw a lot of chair hogging going on. There was always somewhere to sit on any deck. Dive in movies were good as usual.

I went to a couple of shows. I always attend the love and marriage show because I find it so funny. This was probably the least funny one I attended but I stilled laughed. The cruise director was Dee and she sure loved to talk! In my opinion she came over the PA system way too much and talked way too long!

Debarkation was not too bad. We wanted to get off the ship as early as possible because we had to drive straight back home so that I could go to work the next morning. UGG! Having FTTF we were told to meet in the theater at 7:00 am. We got there about 6:55 am and the theater was packed!!! Couldn't get down the aisles due to all the luggage in the way. We just grabbed a seat and waited. And waited. And waited. At about 7:30 we heard that we were delayed because they were looking for a passenger that had warrants out for his arrest and the police were waiting for him. I guess they finally found him because they finally let us go at about 7:45 am. We were through customs and in the truck by 8:20 am. I thought it was pretty good time.

In closing, this was a very relaxing cruise. I read at least 5 books! I spent a lot of time on the balcony or up on the decks reading and listening to my music. Dad spent most of his time in the casino. I will say that there were alot of kids on this cruise but I never had trouble with any of them. In fact, I have never seen so many polite and patient teenagers. It was amazing to see how they treated my dad! The parents of these kids should be really proud! I always hear the horror stories of how kids behave on cruises and was worried when I saw so many getting ready to board. We usually cruise right after Thanksgiving and there haven't been many kids on our previous cruise.

The crew on the Magic were all friendly and helpful. We didn't encounter any mean or hateful crew. We did see some mean and hateful passengers to the crew. The crew just smiled while listening to them moan and complain.

All in all a great cruise! I got a bounce back offer so DH has decided he wants to go on a cruise again (he's only been on 1 and didn't think it was all that much fun! Weirdo!) Looks like we are going to do an Alaskan cruise next year! Bucket list for me!

Please remember that all of these opinions are mine and mine alone. You may not agree but that is what makes us different!

Thanks for the great review we will be on the Magic on April 20th.....

  3. Just got in from cruising the Sensation.... We had an awesome time.... Weather was beautiful the ship was nice and clean, great service, great food... My only complaint is that they need to get better coffee on the buffet area, the coffee at the restaurants was always fresh.... Other wise it eas a fantastic 3 day cruise.... Now waitin to sail on April 20th on the carnival Magic....

  4. we had planned on going on the Sunshine last year in October, but because of all the negative reviews we decided not to go and booked another ship instead. This September I booked anyways and my husband and I absolutely loved it. We have been on many cruise lines such as RCCL, NLC, PRINCESS, CELEBRITY AND DISNEY..... So we have an idea what to compare it to and my husband loved the Sunshine... We are planning another Sunshine cruise for next year. All I have to say is DO NOT listen to negative reviews. Always experience it on your own.... There are lots of people that are never happy no matter how great the ship may be....

  5. Hi we will be sailing the Sensation on Dec 10th... Is there any kind of deck parties.... We will be celebrating my nephews 19th birthday and he wants lots of parties that is why we chose Carnival..... Never been on the Sensation could you tell me a little on it.... Thanks

  6. Hi..

Help me decide on which ship is better for me & my fam!

    I have two boys ages 3 & 5

    (at the time of sailing)

We can only go the week of April 24, 2016 because of school.

I'm planning on staying at LEGOLAND resort for 2 days prior to sailing.

So these are the 2 ships I have a choice on.

We'll be flying to Orlando from NYC.

I see that Sunshine has more food options, but need help on which is more kid-friendly.

    Thanks in advance!

    Definitely the Sunshine....

  7. After initial concerns, we've decided to give the Sunshine a try. No ship is perfect. We loved the outdoor family fun features of the Magic but found it too spread out. We loved the size of the older, smaller ships, but my kids missed the sports square and waterworks. Honestly, we've never cared much about the pool/s on cruise ships, because we can swim in much larger and less crowded pools at home. I think the reviews with positives and negatives give us a good idea of what expectations to have and how to prepare for potential problems. Hopefully, I'll manage to post a review after our trip.

You will have a wonderful time....

  8. I agree with this wholeheartedly. Not everyone is a member of CC and not everyone is as informed as some of us are before they travel or book a cruise. I think a lot of the bad reviews are Carnival's fault. Can you imagine booking the Sunshine as a new cruiser thinking you are booking a new ship and then getting to the ship and realizing it is not new? I think that leads to a decent amount of the disappointment of cruisers.

I can't imagine how disappointed we would be if we saw on Carnival's page were next to the ship it says "new" next to the Sunshine. We booked it, got there and then saw it was most certainly not new....

Carnival should rethink the way they are advertising. Maybe instead of saying "new" they could say "fully remodeled" or something like that.

First of all I would never book a cruise no matter which cruise line before reading the specs of the ship, so if they book thinking it was a new ship it's their own fault..... Specially if you are a first time cruiser always read the ships information before you book. I have taken over 80 cruises on several cruise lines and I still read everything there is before booking on a ship...

  9. How come the rating of Carnival Sunshine is so low? It only has a 64% positive rating? Has anybody been on it recently? I have read the reviews and people say it is really crowded, not enough public space, and that they didn't do a good renovating it.

Are people just holding it to higher standards than the older ships?

We are looking to book a cruise in February. We will be traveling with our 3 year old. Should I avoid it? We did Carnival Magic about 5 years ago and loved it so I am shocked about the negative reviews. I could do Disney but of course it will be a lot more.

Because of so much bad reviews we didn't do the Sunshine last October as planned we decided to do Disney instead, finally my husband said let's do it anyways. We did the Sunshine 9/6 - 9/11. So glad we did, we had an awesome time. From the Cabin, Crew, Food everything was wonderful. I have sailed on NCL, RCL, and Disney both my husband and I thought this was one of our best cruise. Always found chairs on both the Lido Pool and Serenity Pool. We went different times during the day. We have learned not to pay any attention to the reviews.. I will say try the Sunshine...

  10. We were on the roll call for this cruise with you. Invkevin and his son Chris and I met up at the Havana Bar for meet and greet but did not see anyone else till we headed out for muster and met one other person. We loved the cruise and thought Donkey was great. If you by chance saw a young lady around the ship that has mental disabilities and was on the dance floors and in the halls dancing, that was Amanda. We had so many people telling us how they enjoyed watching and dancing with her.

Hi, I did see you a couple of times and even told my husband that you were part of the roll call. We saw Amanda dancing a couple of times on deck 5 to the music on the lobby...

  11. Thank you for your review. There certainly seems to be far more negatives than positives from passengers during the past year or so.

I believe when it comes to the Sunshine I'll stick to the ('When in Doubt, Don't') philosophy...

With all of the time & money that is put into a cruise, the Sunshine is just not worth it.

Just keep in mind that some of the negative reviews could just be passengers that will never be content and you will be missing out.....

  12. We sail her in 20 days! Sounds like we chose the right ship for a relaxing 5 day cruise.

Interested in the Havana Café and the Grand Plaza (Taste Bar) for breakfast.

as there a wide range of choices, or just Danish and coffee?

How about Lunch? Was it offered in these places also?

What were the shows like in the Liquid Lounge? Have heard mixed reviews.

Lunch is offered at the Havana Bar, very good by the way...

  13. We were also on this cruise and have different feelings with the previous reviews. We have cruised NCL, RCCL, and Disney, both my husband and I thought this was one of the best cruise we have been on.

Cabin: We had a balcony on deck 6 and it was a nice size, it had a king bed, vanity, sofa bed and coffee table. The balcony had 2 chairs and a small table. Plenty of closet space. Our cabin attendant introduced himself on the very first day and asked if we found our cabin clean. He also asked our names and our dining time. We saw him at least once or twice a day and always friendly. Walking down the hallways if a cabin attendant was there or we ran into a crew staff they always said hello and how was your day.

Pools: We were always pool hopping between the Serenity and Lido pools always found chairs with no problem.

Cruise Staff: Extremely friendly always said hello with a smile and we saw plenty of them during the cruise.

Dining: We mainly had breakfast and lunch on the Lido Deck and Havana Bar enjoyed every meal. We had Your Time Dining, had a great table with wonderful servers. We got the same table each night. Dinner was very enjoyable. I am a very picky eater and ate things that had never tried before. If I didn't like something the server would bring me something else. Remember this is a cruise ship serving thousands of meals, the food is never going to be as hot as the one you cook at home.

Entertainment: It was fun, they always had different things going on. As far as the guests on board the ship had 3006 guest not 3600 as Donkey stated. The shows were good, Epic Rock was the best and in any show you attend they are always going to be loud.

Ship: I had read other reviews before I sailed that there was no A/C, let me share some on that review. Our cabin was freezing each night we had to lower the temperature. The public areas were also cold specially deck 5, were Ocean Plaza is. If you go to deck 5 that will take you through the entire ship from front to back.

We will sail the Sunshine again, do not be afraid to sail this ship. We were supposed to sail last October and because of all the bad reviews we decided not to, but a couple of co-workers sailed and said they had a blast so we decided to give it a try and glad we did.

We have over 50 cruises on different cruise lines so we kind of know what to expect and we got more on this cruise than what we expected.

Hope you have as much fun as we did when you sail the Sunshine...
