  1. All I ever read and am told is how terrible that port is. We are going for the first time in Oct, so I hope we have the same experience that you do. What is the best arrival time?

I will be the first to admit that it is not the prettiest port around and the current facility is a converted military building but the departure port for me is not the cruise. It is only a location to get me onboard. There are other ports that I have been to where I would say they are also not pretty. Barbados is one example where it is a commercial area with the port facilities added at the front. They are suppose to be changing that around as well. St Maarten has a pretty port on one side but industrial on the other side (so it depends on what side of the port you are looking at).

My feeling is the ship is the cruise, the ports (after you pass through security) is the cruise, the departure port is only a way to it.

  2. We have been through Bayonne six times using the shuttle. Later this year it will be #7 and maybe even #8 (if the new terminal is not ready yet). I have no problems using it. That has been the method used since the port opened and it has been that way for about 10 years now with almost every cruise sold out. I am glad that they are bringing the port current so you can board right from the terminal but until then, the shuttle will not be an issue for me.

  3. I guess things should start picking up quickly then. Still don't see how this will be completed by November... that's a big job for 6 months but we shall see!

In a city near me, there was construction going on for a new garage for the commuter rail system into Boston. I noticed that just a few weeks ago, there did not seam to be any progress (possibly it was all footings and land prep). I went by the area over the weekend and saw a structure starting to erupt out of the ground. It appears that they are using pre-constructed components and are lifting them into place like a 3D jigsaw puzzle. If that is how they intend to do the construction in Bayonne, then maybe it could be completed in time.

  4. I noticed that as well and I agree. We were not wild at all about the cabin storage on Silhouette last year.

After we got off the Silhouette, I managed to have a discussion with someone in the "X" president's office and this topic came up. I mentioned that it wold not be a bad idea to include one of these

in each cabin. I have to assume that they have not done this yet. Maybe some of us may have to bring our own.:D

  5. If it's a studio cabin, it's a Super Studio Ocean View balcony (119 sq. ft., balcony 55 sq. ft.). There are balcony doors behind Meyer Werft employee.

Interior studio (101 sq. ft.). Wonder if a 6'3" guy like me would fit in either one!

There was some comments on different parts of the ship being a Solsticizing of Royal ships which was a thought way back when Project Sunshine was announced. Some of the comments came from me when there was talk about the design of the Promenade. Now that I see the rendering of a cabin, they seem to have done it here as well. The storage space over the bed is the same as it was on the Solstice class ships for "X". There was much discussion when we were on the Silhouette about this. For me it is not an issue, but for others, like my wife, unless you climb on the bed, that storage space is not convenient.

  6. Bring it to Bayonne!!! Great pictures!

It would be great if they could. I have seen posts saying it cannot make it under the Verrazano and others that say it can. On the internet I found details that said

" All ships at sea are built to pass under three major gateway bridges: the Golden Gate in San Francisco, which has a clearance of 220 feet; the Verrazano in New York, with a clearance of 228 feet; and the Store Belt west of Copenhagen, which has a clearance of 213 feet."

Of course that would mean that they would have to retract the funnels and run at full speed which I have heard actually drops the ship deeper into the water. Not sure if that would be acceptable in a harbor as busy as New York/New Jersey.

Does anyone have a definitive answer to this ongoing question?

  7. Here is a better photo of the Quantum of the Seas taken today. It's not blue and you don't have to 'crane' your neck to see all of the bridge. :)

    The solarium looks great.

When I am on a ship, I love going out to the bow. I am not sure, from the pictures, if bow access is available on Quantum, but at least it looks like I can get a simulated bow experience up in the Solarium.

She is looking mighty fine. Just a little over 8 months before I am up in that Solarium.

  8. Does anyone Know of the excursion on Saint kitts that includes a train ride with a:pcatamaran:pride

Back in '07 we took the excursion when it was only the train and a bus. I do not know if they still have the bus option, but that excursion was one of the best of all the excursions we have taken. We were told about the history of island, the people and many beautiful sights. They served drinks, their own sugar cookie (small and very sweet) and we were serenaded by locals who came on board to provide local music. The train has outside and inside (air conditioned) viewing and you can switch between both during the trip. You do not have to stay inside or outside (at least that was the way it was for us).

I am sure that the catamaran part of the trip would be an added plus. When we took it with the train and bus it was $99/pp

  9. They did all that engineering and calculations years ago. I believe Celebrity Solstice has been in the harbor and since Quantum is based off the Solstice class, it won't be an issue. They have to have a certain amount of margin in case of high seas, etc.

I agree. I actually sailed on the Silhouette out of Bayonne and we made it just fine. I should have put a ;) or a :D after my post. They would not be using Bayonne as a home port if there were any question about making it under the bridge. ALTHOUGH, one year we were on the Explorer of the Seas to Bermuda and Tropical Storm Hannah was coming in as we were to set sail. we had to leave early to get under the bridge before the storm surge held us in port.

  10. First, yes they do trans-atlantics, even with new builds. In this case, the boat will leave from Southhampton, England to NJ.

Second, I believe she is talking about going under the Verrazano Bridge. The ship will have to go under this bridge in and out of the Port of Bayonne. it seems like it will only have a few feet of clearance.

    Verrazano bridge wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verrazano-Narrows_Bridge

They certainly do not want an "OOPS" situation when she arrives at the port entrance for the first time. I understand that in some cases, they actually travel under the bridges at a higher speed so the ship actually "skooches" down in the water to make the clearance more. We hope that at 228 above mean high tide, that the clearance is not an issue.

  11. We are thankful for the pictures taken by some Tourists with a keen eye for detail (and since RCI is not releasing anything).

I think that while the Royal Promenade may not look anything like the Voyager, Freedom or Oasis Class RP, it has the potential of providing great views especially from deck 5 and a few areas on deck 4 as seen on the deck plans. Whenever the subject of the RP comes up I am always drawn to the area forward of the grey area all the way to just about the Photo Gallery. On the Port side as you come up from deck four staircase that area looks like a "Cat-Walk". And because the area left of the Cat-Walk has nothing, it appears to be open to deck four below. The confusion though is that deck 4 of that ares shows as Retail. Hmmm! And so the guessing and speculations continue until the real reveal :)

When we were on the Celebrity Silhouette and Eclipse, their "promenade" was a two-deck complex of stores, including the photo gallery and bar areas. It ran from their MDR to the theater. It also meandered in the same manner as it appears in the deck plans I have seen. On 4, it wrapped around the casino and there were the stores for liquor, sundries, etc on the port side. There were also three (if I remember correctly) bars right near the MDR - Martini Bar, Crush (both port side) and WineCellars (starboard). On 5 you had the coffee shop (Cafe Baccio), gelataria, Bistro on 5 (a $5 upcharge crepe restaurant), photo gallery, bars and specialty stores on the starboard side with open space near midship that looked down over deck 4. That was where their Molecular Bar was with a convertible area for art display and seminars. That area continued into the forward entertainment atrium which had the disco, a small theater used for comedy shows, talks, etc, some specialty sales ($10 watches, etc.), an open staircase between 4 & 5 and then continued further into the theater. It did not have any views of the ocean on 4 but you did have access to the outside deck on 5 on port and starboard sides at various points.

  12. Good point. In fact, if you overlay the deck 4 and 5 deck plans from the Reflection, you have a really close fit to the deck 4 and 5 "royal" promenade on Quantum. Looking more and more than a morph on the Solstice class design every day:(

We were on the Sillhoutte and the Eclipse. We enjoyed both. If this is a blend of Royal and Celebrity, I am all for it.

  13. OMG! Am I spatially challenged or whatever it's called! I was looking at the photo in the previous post, and trying to figure out, in relation to the deck plan, what deck those two open spaces were on. I couldn't figure it out because ...

I thought that the top enclosed deck was deck 15 and I didn't think there would be a deck labelled 13, so that was throwing off my count from the top downwards! And then there is the area in the yellow square (that's also on the other side of the ship) that was throwing me off until I realised it was the front edge of Two70, and not part of the 'regular' decks in front of it.

    TGIF!!! I am zonked!

I think I got it right ...

There better be a deck 13. I have a cabin on that deck in December. :D
