  1. If I were ever to go on a world cruise, I would want to do it on an ocean liner (for good stability) and so QM2 is the only way to go. I've always wanted to sail around Africa by liner, and hopefully one day I will. I've never been on the Queen Elizabeth but I've seen photos and she looks magnificent. The fact that she is a cruise ship is no detriment on her beauty. :)

Either way, you will have a wonderful time I am sure.

  2. Only two lines I know with solo cabins(and only on a few of their ships are royal and Norwegian

I was unaware some of Royal Caribbean's ships have single cabins. Do you happen to know which ones? I will have to look into that. Thank you! :)

The Cunard Line's ships also have single cabins. Rumor mill is they won't be singles for long, though. I do hope they keep single cabins on at least the grand Queen Mary 2. Solo passengers cross the Atlantic quite frequently and there is a demand for them.

  4. We have stayed in porthole cabins many times, we love them. And have been in a forward obstructed view cabin one time, it is very nice as you can be outside on that huge deck in just a few seconds.

Either way, you will have no problem dining with your friends. Just have your bookings linked before you leave.

Can I link my bookings with them if I book separately from them? I think I might book earlier than they do.

  5. I had cabin 2444 for 21 days on a B2B Journeys cruise in 2015...this is a fantastic cabin and all my friends on the sailing were totally jealous. There is so much floor space, I could have had a dance party with a few friends.

There is vibration as others said about coming and leaving ports. A couple of nights I heard banging, which was probably in stairwell, but I travel with earplugs, so it wasn't really an issue.

I think if you are traveling solo, these 2 cabins are the best. I even think it's a great deal for 2 if one doesn't mind an upper bunk.

    They sell out fast..

I am hope I get the chance to book one then.

  6. thanks for this link...i loved seeing the footage from the original queen mary

i sailed her back in 1963..

we were in first class (back in the days when classes were classes, with locked gates in between)..

i was 7 years old and it was like living in a fairy tale..

The Queen Mary is probably my favorite of all the ocean liners. I love visiting it in Long Beach when I can. I never sailed on it, but my grandfather and great uncle both sailed on it when they were GIs during the Second World War. How wonderful that you got the chance to sail the Queen Mary. It must have been wonderful. :)

  7. They are not wheelchair accessible. When you enter the cabin you have a long narrow hallway into the room. The reason for this is because the cabin is behind the crew staircase. We liked the layout of the cabin. We had cabin 2444. If you look at ship cabins dot com the first 5 pictures for cabin 2444 are the pictures I took. I don't know how they ended up on there and there is no credit for who submitted them. But I know they are mine because I can even see part of my knee in one of the pictures.

We sailed before the Triumph had its big problem. We did have a great deal of vibration coming and leaving port. I mean the whole back of the ship shook. We also had some very strange, loud, unpredictable noises. I don't know if it is the same now. It could have been a prelude to the fire in the engine room which is below the cabin. You will have to see if someone has been in the cabin since it was adrift in the Gulf for the current status.

I found your photos. How was the vibration at sea? Was it so unbearable that you couldn't enjoy the cabin?

  8. How about equipment noise or vibrations - say from thrusters or azipods/engines ?

    Thanks

I have been told by some people there is some motion and from others that say they haven't. I would suggest googling the two rooms as it will pull up multiple threads. I can't speak from personal experience, but I really hope to be able to book them now that I know about them. They look wonderful.

  9. Onboard, are these passageways obvious are "hidden"? I.E. is a hallway 3L even though you're on 3 and might not realize it's a midlevel passageway?

I know that your question was already answered, but I wanted to submit two photos I took on my crossing of the deck in question. The photo is a photo I took of Deck 3L while I was on Deck 3L and is looking toward the staircase and the auditorium to get up to deck 3. The staircase he was referring to is down the hall, to the right and around the corner. Go up the staircase to get to the auditorium, go down to access the deck 3L where I took the photo.

  10. Of course, the TA we have just completed was our first (and, likely, last) Cunard voyage so we had no experience of the grill before the menu changes. But I would say that while there might not have been a colossal choice, it would be a picky individual that wouldn't find something in each course to savour.

Furthermore, on a couple of evenings there would be 2 main courses that were particularly attractive to me so I'd ask the waiter for his recommendation. Easy answer? Have both. So I did!

We also thought the food in the King's Court looked attractive although we chose not to eat there.

Is there any reason this is your last Cunard voyage? You seem from this post to have enjoyed yourself. Did you post earlier? If you did, sorry for asking. I'll go look for your earlier post.

  11. 2444/2445 look fantastic! They are unusually shaped. Are they wheelchair accessible cabins?

Edit: I looked for the wheelchair accessible cabins on Carnival's website and they aren't listed as such. I just wanted to double check before I look into them since I don't want to take them from someone who needs a wheelchair accessible cabin.

Sorry. Bumping this up. Are 2444/2445 wheelchair accessible?

    Thanks! That's good to know!

  13. Just back from Triumph and the perfect solo room 2445 (IMHO). There are only two of these rooms in the aft cabin they are still considered 1A and listed under inside catagory but have two full windows and a couch with single bed and a upper if needed.. Amazing rooms.

I didn't grab any pics this trip but if you google and there are multiple pics Triumph 2444/2445.

Difficult to get since these are a pretty open secret on cruise critic but wonderful when you can get them. I have had Carnival operators say they don't have windows, but trust me fantastic rooms. Also great plus is a short hop to elevators and straight up to Lido for AM coffee runs (or pm cookie run)

  14. To add to this:

You can dine when you like during the restaurant hours. You can order off menu so long as you make the request half a day in advance. You can also take afternoon tea in your penthouse, served by your butler.

Of course, the ability to confiscate food from Britannia class passengers for fun is another perk of the Grills. Only joking about that one ;)

AHA! I knew my plate had less food than usual! :D

Enjoy your upcoming Princess cruise and QM2 voyage. :)

  15. Getting back to the subject of this thread.......

Have sailed Mercury, Millennium, Summit, Infinity, Constellation, Solstice, Eclipse, Silhouette, Reflection,

They all are great, but the latest (Reflection) I think is the best.

    Why?

The extra deck makes a difference, placing the Ocean Cafe at same level as the pools. Even nicer, you can walk 360 degrees around deck 15 on one level. On other S class, need to use lots of stairs to walk 360 degrees around the ship.

Also Sunset bar is much nicer, and there is a larger outdoor shaded area for Ocean Cafe.

Negatives are the cabanas at the Lawn Club, and Sky Lounge no longer 270 degrees, as suites have been jammed into the port side.

Compared with M class, biggest negative is no T-pool.

The S class are more alike than they are different.

I know this is slightly off-topic but I wanted to congratulate you on having sailed Union-Castle. It's one of those companies I wish had still been around in my lifetime (Victoria 2000 cruise notwithstanding).

  16. Hello everyone! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your families. I'm looking at taking a Carnival cruise one of these days with some friends of mine, and I think I might be booking a room for myself (in spite of the extra cost). I was wondering if anyone has ever had the odd interior cabins with portholes (if it looks like a duck, etc.) or the ones with windows overlooking the forward "semi-secret" decks. I know the porthole upper and lower cost no extra, but is there a downside to the noise far forward (anchor)? Is the outside/inside with a lovely view of a deck worth the extra money? And would I be able to coordinate eating at a table with my friends in the main dining room even if I'm located further forward (they prefer inside amidships, I prefer a cheap view in order to tell what time of day it is so I don't oversleep and miss something important). Thank you so much! Happy Holidays.

  17. I don't think it is a matter of not liking the ship but we've had 3 of the 4 class ships here, the Pride, Spirit and Miracle, which we hoped would get the full 2.0 upgrades.

The Spirit class ships are great but after sailing them multiple times, we want something new.

I see. I didn't realize they didn't get full upgrades and are there frequently. Would you want Conquest class or Triumph class or the newer Dream and Vista class?

  18. The Miracle does not have all the new bells and whistles of the larger Carnival ships.

We really like the layout though and do not always think that bigger=better!

The Miracle is supposed to go to Florida next year and the Splendor was supposed to be here in Long Beach to replace her but now it looks like that will only be for 1 year if at all.

We'll have to stay tuned to see what actually happens!

That was what attracted me to the idea of a Miracle cruise: The layout. It's unfortunate that the Splendor is going. I suppose I'll need to sail on it before that happens as it's the only Concordia-Class ship in this hemisphere on a regular basis.

  19. It's very simple: I'm tired of the Miracle. I was also disappointed it didn't get the full 2.0 upgrades. I'd like to see a different class of ship come to Los Angeles.

I was excited to see a Panama Canal cruise offered within the time frame I wanted...until I saw it was on the Miracle.

I see. That can be frustrating. Do you enjoy the Fantasy class ships that go out of Long Beach?

  20. You're more likely to find Cruise Critic posts from people who are focused on finding the negative issues of a ship or some issue that may have negatively affected their vacation experience, whereas Peter Knego's focus is on the positives.

Ah. Good point. People are more inclined to write negative reviews than positive. I was surprised by QM2's rating as well as Carnival Paradise's. That makes sense.

  21. When we cruised, early December, there was always chairs around the pool. There were also plenty of seats on decks above Lido. This was first time we didn't have problems with chogs. The pool (one) and waterslide wasn't crowded either. The only place we found a shortage of chairs was on the serenity deck. The hot tubs were plenty busy too.

Thank you! Was the waterslide in a separate waterworks area or with the main pool?
