  1. Thanks Alto.

I did in fact read your brilliant and detailed review the other day ( I needed a rest afterwards!). You put a lot of effort into that and the photos were great.

Not sure what you mean by northern European forum.

I've been on the forums for the individual cities on our route and have gained some useful info.

It's always a dilemma.... pay a lot and let someone shepherd you around or try and DIY.

It seems Talin, Copenhagen ( unless we dock at the new terminal), Warnemunde are walkable in.

St P we need to go on a registered company tour, Stockholm is an hour by public transport, Helsinki is an unknown situation at the mo.

  2. First of all many thanks for all the input.

I apologise for not replying. I'm normally very good at that, and in fact I forgot I had made the post. I have done quite a bit of research on TA.

We have booked the cruise, leaving next May.

Out niece has organised it. Her and husband, her parents, us.

She is an online travel agent, so we got a good deal. This includes balcony cabins, drinks package and gratuities.

I would be grateful for info on the ports. ( apart from Southampton)

    They are .....

Copenhagen, where we have an overnight. Arrive 1400 and leave 1500 the next day

    Talin 1000- 1800

St Petersburg where we have an overnight. Arrive 0700 leave1800 next day

    Helsinki arrive 0700 leave 1600

    Stockholm (Nynashamna) 0800-1700

    Wanemundee 0700- 2130

I refuse to pay the extortionate ship's excursion prices.

In St Pete we intend to take the two day excursion with TJ Travel @ about £200. Because I understand you can't just walk off the ship and do your own thing. The travel company deals with the visas.

The other ports .......can you tell me how easy it is to get into the cities from the terminal. We just want to wander round on our own.

Stockholm might be a problem as I understand Nynashamns is a good hour away.

I would be greatful for any advice on this.

    Thank you

  3. Our cruise history.

1 Caribean 10 years ago. I think we got together with other passengers and picked up a driver in the ports

    2. Ncl out of Barcelona. Took a couple of ships excursions. They didn't seem particularly expensive.

3 ncl out of Rome a few weeks ago. Did our own thing and stayed pretty local. The excursion prices seem to have risen greatly since cruise number 2.

We knew what the prices were before we left as we had looked them up on the ncl website.

We liked everything else about the cruise.

  4. Thanks Kieth..terrific info as ever

No we didn't have a balcony on the Epic ( non were available when we booked)

We looked at the cabin opposite on the change over day and and would defo have a balcony next time. So is the Getaway doing a Baltic itinerary next year? Stockholm appeals to me. As a 20 year old uni student we had to spend one semester in industry. My friend Colin got a job in Stockholm. So me and my girlfriend spent 5 days Hitch Hikeing there. So it would be nice to go back.

Regarding when to book.... What is the best policy. Do we book as soon as the cruises are released or wait till nearer the sailing date and take a chance on getting a good deal

  5. As you know, if you've read my review, we were mighty pleased with our recent cruise on the epic. We would gladly sail on her again except for the fact that the shows would be the same and we would like to see different ones.

So assuming we stuck with ncl ( we were also pleased with our cruise on the Spirit three years ago), what would be a good ship to investigate. We'd prefer it to be European based but we would also consider Caribean

    Thanks

  6. Don't do it the way I did it… :D

You have a 20-minute window to edit your post, after that the Edit button disappears.

I can understand wanting to see different shows. So the easy solution in your case is to book a different ship! But if you cruise NCL regularly, chances are you will end up repeating something (same ship, same ports, same shows, etc.) And of course whenever NCL changes something, there will always be someone there to complain that big bad FDR just took away something that they liked…

At least for the megaships, you know what the big shows are going to be. On the older ships, you don't really know anything about the production shows until you get on board (unless you find recent info from other cruises).

    Who or what is FDR?
