  1. Don't laugh just yet. Look at all the conflicting info you've gotten here.

Read your contract with the cruise line. It should spell out any weight and/or size restrictions. If not, check with your TA and then confirm what you are told by calling the cruise line directly (several times to assure that you are getting accurate information). ...

Thanks!! I've got time to do some research, so all of the info shared has been helpful. I haven't flown so have no experience with airport scanners. This is all totally new to me.

  2. Also, having been plus size in the recent past, options are much better online!

This is a big issue for me right now, too. It used to be I'd buy the biggest plus size available. Now, I usually buy an xl, but friends are pointing out that that's probably too big and looks baggy. For a jacket (Port Authority brand) at work I was going to get a 1x. Luckily we were able to try the sizes on before the order was place. I ended up with a medium. So, I really need to be able to order from somewhere like Amazon so I can easily return items.

  3. Usually,, the limit is 200LBS PER PERSON...if you need that much stuff, there is something majorly wrong with you!

You are really only limited by the airlines. If you aren't flying...the sky's the limit! Bring the kitchen sink!

Ha Ha!! Ok, I'll relax now. No kitchen sink is coming with me.

  4. I find any specifics on if there is a limit to the amount of luggage you can take onto a ship. The only reference on the HAL site that I've found is that you could be limited by the airlines. I'm not flying so no airline is involved with my trip. Can anyone tell me if the cruise lines limit the amount of luggage you can take.

Also, what is considered "carry on". Is there a size limit to it?

  5. I went straight to STP and Columbia because I shop there often - I didn't find those through Google. (actually I shop the Columbia outlet nearby, but when I'm trying to find something online to show people...)

OK, that makes sense. There's not a lot of choices in my area, so I usually look online for most items.

  6. Thank you. I have "Alaska by Cruise Ship" by Anne Vipond, and I will go ahead and order that other one you mentioned at Amazon. Travel Reading is one of my great pleasures, even if I never visit the spot. This time I am though!

My cruise is also next May and can't wait. I ordered and received both of these books last week and they both seem excellent. I'm especially excited by the "Mile-by-Mile" book. So much to see on the cruise, I don't know when I'll be able to sleep. I also bought "Alaska" by Michener. I'm hoping that reading and researching will help the next 11 months fly by.

  7. For some reason, I haven't been able to respond. So, I'm trying Explorer instead of Chrome.

Thanks everyone, for all of your suggestions. I'm just not finding what I'm looking for. I'd like a microfleece, lightweight, full zip, hoodie. I have a lightweight packable rain jacket, so just need something warm. I'm pretty warm blooded so it will be the only "warm" thing I take. I live in an area where if you don't go outside when it's raining, you don't ever go outside. ;-) I'm OK with rain.

My cruise isn't until next May, so I have plenty of time. I'm just hoping to get some of the necessities purchased now instead of waiting until the last minute. Who knows what the weather will be like then. It would be nice if it will be like it's been this year, but I'm not going to count on it.

And, if anyone has any suggestions as to why I keep getting error messages (when I click on anything, not just trying to respond. I did clear my cookies a few minutes ago, but that didn't help, either), I'd love to hear them.

  8. Really? I just bought some more at Target.

Thanks, again! I went to Target tonight and they did indeed have the Downy Wrinkle Releaser. I had to ask for help because I couldn't find it. The girl knew they had the travel size (didn't know it came that way, but I picked up a couple) and then was able to find the regular size. Hope this stuff works!!

  9. Just came across this one - has pocket for water bottle and reasonably priced.

How funny!! I ended up ordering this one in midnight and it arrived yesterday. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two, but it's a bit smaller than I was thinking I needed. Other than that, I love it. I'm sure I can make it work. My 23 oz water bottles fit perfectly in the outside pockets.

  10. I don't know about this method. The way the porters toss luggage around I'm sure it doesn't make a load of difference how well you pack.

My wife brings a bottle of wrinkle relaxer. She just said "Tell him to get Downy Wrinkle Relaxer, it will change his life". So there you have it.

I went looking for the wrinkle relaxer today and tried several stores. I was finally told it has been discontinued. :(

  11. Baggalini bags aren't waterproof. Mine got soaked in Alaska. :( I have had better luck with the Haiku bags. The best selection is on Zappos.

My serious travel crossbody bag is made by Eagle Creek. It is waterproof, has an outside pocket for a bottle of water, features lots of pockets and organizer sections, plus sufficient space to stuff a packaway jacket or windbreaker. If you're interested in Eagle Creek, go directly to the manufacturer's website, find the style you like, then try Amazon, Zappos or other websites for actual shopping.

Hope this helps. The right bag makes travel easier..

Good to know since Alaska is where I'm going. I'll check out Eagle Creek, too

  12. I have the Travelon small cross body (two of them actually).

I find it just the right size for port. A couple of those recommended are very large and I don't carry that much stuff with me. I use this bag everywhere and I love that it has both a bottle holder (that zips closed when not in use) as well as a zipped pocket in the back that will hold my kindle (even kindle fire when I take it) and a top easy access pouch for my phone.

I like this one but am afraid it might be too small for me.

  13. OP - For future reference: Comparing only cabin costs when cruising is a worthless endeavor. A better approach is to compare "net daily rates," which take into account all costs associated with your trip "door to door."

For example, premium cruise lines definitely have higher cabin costs until you determine the value of what is provided beyond what the mass market line provides. This may, and often does include things like airfare, beverages, specialty restaurants, internet, gratuities, etc. Do the math and you may be surprised.

Thanks for your additional info. I guess I'll just have to chalk it up to first time experience (inexperience). I knew I wanted this specific itinerary and didn't have a choice of cruise lines. I made the assumption (only because I didn't know better) that it would include mandatory gratuities. My mistake. I'm sure it will all work out, may have to cut back on excursions.
