Abbott Laboratories apparently has developed one and they will be available next week. Positive results in 5 minutes, negative in 13 minutes. Here is the article.

This is an antigen test, so it will only show if you have the virus right now. An antibody test is different and the key to opening up cruising and opening up the country in general. An antibody test will show if you've ever had the virus and have developed protective antibodies to the disease. Antibody tests are also being worked on. Since so many people were exposed to the SARS-CoV2 virus but never actually developed the disease COVID-19 (asymptomatic).

  2. If we are able to develop and antibody test, it would show who has already had it and recovered. Those people should be safe to cruise. South Korea has a rapid COVID-19 test also which can give you result within minutes. We are working on one in the states. Doesn't have to be the end of cruising, but yes, it will take awhile to recover and we need to be smart about it.

Coronavirus stats.. 24000 infected, 500 deaths... Flu stats.. 26 million infected and this season 10,000 deaths in the US.  Worry about the flu not corona.

Exactly! I work in healthcare and we have had so many patients and staff test positive for Influenza A (H1N1) in the past three weeks. My hands are raw from all of the washing and hand sanitizer. I keep telling people "Stay away. I'm getting on my cruise ship!" while I run after them with sanitizing wipes and a can of disinfectant spray.

I'm on Symphony this Saturday. People keep asking me if I'm scared and plan to cancel. I remind them that this a Caribbean cruise, not Asia.

Not having access to clean water is FAR different than having access to clean water and not using it.

Except that they thought they had clean water until it was discovered that they didn't. On that note, I drink tap water at home because it is perfectly safe where I live and when I'm on the ship, I opt for club soda in a glass (because I like the bubbles) or San Pellegrino in a glass bottle unless I'm taking a couple bottles for an excursion.

  5. We had a family of 14 last year all at one table. We moved around and sat next to different family members each night to mix it up. As someone had suggested above, we also thought about getting a couple smaller tables in the same section, but the one big table worked out nicely for us. They even served us extra dishes family style so that we could each try a bite of something different.

Contact rcldining@rccl.com and see if they can help you. They don't make table arrangements until 5 months out from your cruise. They sent me a list of all of my family members with table assignment and a seating chart when booked.

  6. My significant other just invested $30,000 to take our families on Freedom during the last week of March 2018. There were 14 of us ages 5-66 and I don't think a single person had a complaint. We LOVED it! Our cabins were clean, yes some wear and tear, but not like shabby. Depends on your lifestyle and expectations. 11 of our family members were on their first cruise and they ALL can't wait to book their next. I would say that it was money very well spent! Enjoy. Don't worry.

  7. First cruise 49. Significant other kept bugging me to go on one with him and I FINALLY relented even though I KNEW I was going to hate being stuck on a big floating city.(Yeah, I was wrong)

Second cruise 50, and we took 14 of our family members along for their first cruise (ages 5 to 66).

Now have cruises booked for Feb 2019 and Feb 2020. Kids can't wait to cruise again either.

  8. Depends on the fog. Didn't get off the ship until after 1:30 PM the one time I was on her, and made my 4:10 PM flight with only about 5 minutes to spare. Most of the people I met on the ship had to reschedule their flights. We were there in Feb 2017. Don't know about fog in October. Oh, Galveston Limousine has great shuttle prices and service.

  9. We’ve done the one thru the ship that is run by Rio Secreto. One of our favorite excursions to date.

We normally book all private excursions but since this one involved a ferry to Playa del Carmen we decided to play it safe and book thru RCI. There is a ferry and then a bus or van ride to the site.

It’s one of those once in a lifetime experiences. And of course you have to purchase the photos.

You will wear a wet suit and be in water cruise m ankle deep to over your head. It’s a very unique experience.

Absolutely agree that this should be done as a cruise ship shore excursion. It is a very long day.

  10. Pretty well everything I have read above I can confirm due to my recent experience booking a group with RCCL for our 2020 cruise. We pay in Canadian funds, so the numbers are a little different.

I am told that all cabins booked in the group are refundable. The deposit we had to pay was $530 per cabin (Canadian). I had previously used one of my old Next Cruise certificates to book a cabin on this cruise we were changing into a group block and moving my reservation into this block, so I had to put up the extra almost $500 deposit (which took away one of the great benefits of using the Next Cruise certificate originally). I can also confirm you have to pay that same deposit for a single person in a cabin, which kind of sucks to pay the extra up front, but it also goes the other way and you only have to pay that same amount if you have a cabin with 4 people in it, which we do.

The perks for booking a group differ from cruise to cruise. A person in this thread said each cabin was given $100 OBC and 2 bottles of champagne. We only received a $50 OBC per cabin, but even then, it is still better than receiving no extra perks at all. We book our groups over the school March Breaks when cruise ships always sell out easily, so maybe that is why we are offered less of a bonus per cabin than the other individual mentioned. By the way, which sailing are you on in March 2019 on the Freedom, because we have the March 10th, 2019 booked for our families that year.

We had two Canadian teachers in our group, so we sailed during their spring break this last March. March 25-31, 2018.

  11. When we booked our family cruise (FOS March 2018), we were told that group rate applies to 8 cabins or more. We were booking 8 cabins so it worked out very nicely. We also got $100 per cabin OBC and 2 bottles of champagne per cabin. We did have to pay the full deposit of $500 per cabin upfront which was refundable. We didn't mind paying a deposit up front. It was $4000 less that we needed to pay at final payment.

  12.

Yep. Walking around on "formal night" it looks like some folks are going to a wedding.

My family and I bought our May wedding clothes so that we would have them in time to wear on our March cruise thereby getting at least two uses out of them. Hoping to wear the same formal at my brother's wedding, my son's wedding, and on a couple more cruises in the next two years, LOL.

  13. 3) It would be great to have Canadian offers (or at par dollars) for Canadians cruisers. With 32% exchange rate, a 6000$ cruise cost Canadians 8000$, before any activities, excursions or beverage package. So a family cruise can quickly add up to 10 000$. That is not something we can afford regularly.

I am sorry that the USD/CAD exchange rate has tanked the last couple of years, but it would hardly be fair to US Citizens if you were allowed to pay less for your cruise, just because you are Canadian. This is essentially what you are asking for. I am engaged to a Canadian, so no offense to your citizenship intended.
