I've only cruised Carnival and Norwegian. On land I'm an admitted 4+ star hotel fanatic and a bit of a foodie.
Carnival is just fine. Probably the best bang for the buck in the cruise industry. Unless you are a funsucker you'll have a great time on one of their cruises.

I rate it a solid B for a cruise ship. Good cheeses, salmon. Grocery store level sushi.

Food critics usually post article in major newspapers about establishments open for the holiday. Check miami herald. I know Mitchells fish market and Mortons are open.

12 bucks was most expensive I've ordered on Carnival. Most cheaper.

we bought the cheers program on my first cruise, I haven't done so since. my wife has 2-3 drinks a day but usually no more. I cannot make up for her portion.
since I usually have beverages on land excursions I usually need a day or two at sea not drinking, to get my booze cruise legs back underneath me again.
carnival has pretty decent pricing so it's a no brainer for us.
just got back from NCL where bourbon on rocks was $20. I wish I had the all you can drink package on that cruise but we still about broke even based on her low consumption (even though I dramatically reduced mine due to cost).

my experience on Carnival is that they show live events broadcast on ESPN.
they also have 1-2 local channels from the home port which might feature a random game or two each weekend.
no PPV.

We ate at Supper Club one night for Oh What A Night, it was complimentary. Fixed menu, no exceptions, like a wedding reception. It was pleasant.
We selected teppanyaki, cagneys and Italian place for at sea day dinners. All were great. No upcharges. Prepaid gratuities at time of purchasing UDP, but we left a little extra. Service was flawless.
Wife says lasagna was her favorite ever. Italian joint included first course, then a pasta, then a full sized entree for UDP. I was STUFFED!!!
We really liked the MDR also. Very conceivable one could dine there enjoyably 7 nights. My wife preferred ambiance of Manhattan Room over MDR.
Had had OSHEEHANS for lunch a couple times. Solid but unspectacular.

Cagney's menu IMO is the best now in my last 5 cruises. 29 Oz Tomahawk rib chop, 32 oz Porterhouse, 32 oz Bone-in Prime Rib. For a steak house NOT to have them was a downer... Now they do have them. And for us they were perfectly served as ordered med-rare and well seasoned. We went twice. As I go for the steak, I never have room for dessert so I cannot comment on those. The sautéed Broccoli is awesome, I recommend ordering 2 servings, they are small sides.
I had tomahawk last week, wife had the bone in prime rib.
Both were ridiculously large and delicious but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. Both cuts make dessert impossible to consider.
The creamed spinach was tiny. Thankfully so.

DH is thrilled that on our 4-day cruise the dress code is even more relaxed. He'll be that guy in Le Bistro in cargo shorts and a t-shirt...
Just got back from 7 day cruise.
Shorts were popular in all main dining rooms for dinner. They were 50/50 in the specialty restaurants.
I did not visit Bistro.
The food is tremendous most everywhere on ncl. I love a good dive and a high falutin' foodie joint equally on land, felt right at home onboard everywhere. I did wear tan slacks twice (with flip flops) to dinner to proactively appease the Mrs, but wore shorts to every other meal.
Your fella will fit in fine.

Just got off Escape, bought 4 meals each plan. Totally worth it.
Hibachi was great. Steak and Brazil steak very good. Italian string too.
The regular dining rooms were fine, good quality. We preferred Manhattan though. OSHEEHANS was good for lunch, not so much for dinner.

Definitely tervis.
We always pack foldable duffle bag for emergency, used it yesterday for first time. Too many souvenirs!
Tiny Bluetooth speaker. Can't go a week without music in room.
Snacks for late night, early am.

Escape.
But, it's the only NCL ship I have sailed.
Great food. All the speciality places were strong. Very friendly staff.

Any new updates on the noro from anyone on board right now?
Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Not an issue. I'm onboard now.
I didn't hear a word about anyone getting sick past 7 days, even from common cold.
I saw one guy not finish his steak at Cagneys b/c he wasn't feeling terribly well (which he admitted might be due to previous day alcohol consumption).

I don't buy the OP statement.
Nothing but a rabblerouser.
I'm boarding Escape now and have zero concerns. Except for getting nice weather.

I've been to 25-30 margaritaville properties over the years and the food ain't the draw, gang. It's the License to Chill vibe, music and drinks.
It's a good brand to partner with NCL. As much as I had to admit it I really enjoy a burger from Guy Fieri's on Carnival much more than hitting the buffet. Take me to flavor town any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I take my first cruise on NCL tomorrow and a HUGE reason for that is Margaritaville at Sea/ 5 O'clock Somewhere bar. Hell, I'm staying at MV hotel in Hollywood tonight. I admit I might be a tad over the top fanatic. Ha.
FINS UP!

Things I surprisingly dislike about cruises:
Disembarkation - I know it's gonna go slow and take more time than I want to get luggage. But I still don't like it. (Now I read news websites on cel, which passes the time nicely)
General public's behavior in buffets. Yeah, not a fan. Especially when a slobasaurus gets cranky and asks for "the manager". Really dude?
Things I really like about cruises:
The staff. Never had anything that wasn't a delightful interaction with an employee on a cruise ship. Kudos to everyone that busts ass, without much recognition or compensation, and makes the sailings memorable.
The bathrooms: I really expected not to be pleased with the facilities in cabin. What can I say...I'm kinda new to cruising, used to resorts. But they are a solid B+ in my book.
Sitting on the balcony when arriving in port while my wife, without fail, is sleeping. I've never been to the same port
twice (until next week) so it's all new and exciting to me. I also have to admit enjoying the TV channel that displays on a map where the ship is. I don't quite get that either, ha!

no kidding? I wasn't aware of that.
Not sure why there is such a limited schedule, this seems like a signature feature on the Escape. Honestly, Margaritaville at Sea is the main reason I booked this particular cruise.
Perhaps NCL has to pay royalties to Margaritaville Holdings and the reduced hours equate to a smaller fee.
Any way you slice it this is not good news for me.

We were going to do it one year but another family we knew was sailing on a different line the same day and didn't want to spend the money so we went to Junkanoo beach which is right next door. Beach o.k.
Other times just stayed on ship. There are some other resort options there but the Hilton is nice and close.
Google gambree + hotel name. I read an ncl cruise review of his, he went there. He's very thorough!

I'm on the Escape 10/29/16 cruise too.
Originally booked BX for $599 pp
Did not get e-mail, initially. Called the upsell number last week and asked them to send me the e-mail.
Bid $1150 pp and scored the last available OS. :):):D:D Surprised my offer was accepted within 48 hours when they could have held out until 2 days before sailing.
I doubt that minimum bids are effective, unless it's a few days before sailing and there are cabins still available.
Your best chances are if your bid is just marginally above the lowest category on the bid scale.
Next time, I'm going to start with the minimum inside guarantee and upsell from there. It seems that the price of the initial booking has no impact on the bidding process. Only your "free" (not really free) perks are affected.
Hope this strategy helps someone to score an upsell. :):)

I booked at same cost. It dropped 10 days later or so to 499 and I called, Rep said all they could offer was $25 onboard credit pp. Couldnt match new rate. Advised me to wait it out and call again, rates were 399/449 for cruises before ours.
I'm happy as is, $599 is great bargain.
Congrats on the upgrade!

Just off of the Breeze
in Carnival Cruise Lines
Posted
My first cruise a few years ago was on the Breeze. I really enjoyed it.
Loved the Fieri burgers, much more so than buffet. MDR was more than decent. Liked the late night pizzas at back of boat. Loved Ben in piano bar. Butchy baby was a great CD. Also loved the nightly outdoor films. And trivia inside many times a day.
In retrospect I wish it had alchemy bar, which is my favorite place to quaff drinks on CCL.,
