We were on Noordam in June this year, first time with HAL. We liked the ship, some areas maybe seemed dated but overall it was nice. The MDR was nice, we didn't eat in the Lido much but it was never crowded on our trip (full yes but not like other trips where the buffet has left you looking for a place to sit). My husband liked the bar in the Crow's Nest the best (the bartender there made the best margaritas). The Lido pool area was nice and while not crowded always had people sitting in there. Good views, tables with chairs along the windows, a bar, the Dive In, three hot tubs, plus the pool and lounge chairs. We were in Signature Suite 8060. Very nice and comfortable cabin. The bathroom was very large with two sinks, a tub with shower and a separate shower. The bathroom even had a nightlight in the ceiling. My 16 year old liked the Billboard piano bar in the evenings.

We were on that first trip following "Pause."  I found the public areas to be nice and rather new looking.  Cabins seemed to be a work in progress.  Ours, was a mixture of old and new.  Clean and all that, but partially dated in decor.

    Don't you have any "symptoms?" . . . . . . . . . . .

So, on Thursday I say I have symptoms to get a free test at Walgreens.  Then on my health check in form when it says do you have symptoms....what do I say?  I have thought about that....

We booked last minute a few weeks ago and was too close to the cruise date to be assigned an arrival time. Was just told to arrive after 1:30. Easy peasy. No lines and on the ship in about 15 minutes. I seriously don't think 90 minutes either way will ruin your cruise. I've been much more stressed about the limited time to get the negative covid test for our next cruise. Looks like a Wednesday trip all the way to Seattle for us. But Alaska on HAL is worth it. A lot safer than staying in Sequim or Port Angeles!

Check with Jim's Pharmacy in Port Angeles for the Covid Test.  Walgreens etc only do for symptoms or exposure.  Jim's will do for travel.  Of course they charge $99 for the test.

That is good to know as none of the pharmacies in my area offer a rapid test, only the PCR test.

I looked at that home test.  I don't trust the mail/fedEx delivery times to get it back within the 72 hours

Thank you so much for your input.  Honestly, it's a guessing game.  If we're lucky, Walgreen's opens its appointments just after midnight for the day after that (mine here are usually full) AND the day after that.  Have to stay on top of emails, that I do, and texts.  And I did two PCR tests last fall for medical procedures at our doctor's office, and they both resulted in about 24 hours--same as others above.

Our local Walgreen's and RiteAid only do tests for "symptoms" and "exposure" cases.

I saw this yesterday and went through the Questions, for me it came up with two things, first was at this time they could not guarantee 48 hour results, then came back I did not qualify for the Free testing and they would not be able to assist me. I think this whole thing was a half baked way of HAL looking like they were helping with the covid tests. In reality it is just a smoke screen of no help at all.

Following the link I learned that I would have to make a 3 hour trip from home for one of those "free" tests.

I think there's this outdated idea that it's all the same food coming from the same place and maybe back in the day it was, long before the specialty restaurants became the new thing.

On my last cruise, I did a "Kitchen Tour".  Yes, indeed they have a special kitchen which adjoins the regular kitchen.

  8. am I being unreasonable?  Is this how it really is going to work?

I am attaching a copy of a chat with HAL. Seriously, can nothing be done about this?
Colleen squier] five of us are traveling together. Will be driving three hours to seattle on the morning of departure
[Colleen squier] our check in times are all over the place. From 12N to 1:30
[Colleen squier] Can we get them at the same time? Or will some of us have to stand out in the cold for over an hour?
[Colleen squier] our records are linked
[Estanauly] Unfortunately we are unable to change the checkin times. You are welcomed to ask once you get to the pier if the times have not autochanged on their own by the time you leave.
[Colleen squier] Three of us are 4* and two are new to HAL. None of us are pleased with the possibility of having to wait outside
    [Colleen squier] This is unacceptable!
[Estanauly] However, I cannot guarantee they will accomodate the request.
[Colleen squier] I understand that you cannot guarantee what others will do
[Colleen squier] But.....HAL NEEDS TO CHANGE THIS

If I recall correctly, others have posted about similar events in the PG and did not receive any Mariner discount.  Perhaps others will post who were directly affected.  My memory works on a half-time basis: sometimes great, other times it's on a cruise and can't be bothered with working to remember details.

We were on a holiday cruise last year.  No discount.  The brunch was nice, but in my opinion not worth the cost.  We will be on this cruise with you!  Not going for the brunch.

    Lots of things are gone.

Dutch night in the dining room -- each person got a Dutch hat.  Also in the bars the ladies and men wore Dutch clothing and Gouda cheese was served along with the regular crudites.

Flaming desserts are gone -- not even allowed to do them in the kitchen.

There were wine parties out by the back pool with cheeses and fondue.

Stood in line to be introduced to the captain before entering the show room for a lovely show -- complete with program.

That is just to name a few things.

Most of those things have been gone for several years.  Some are newer deductions.  We also noticed the lack of flowers on the tables in the MDR and the Lido.  The lack of activities and communication.

  11. One of my fondest memories of cruises with sea days is the friendships and conversations in the Knit/Stitch groups organized through Cruise Critic.  I have asked cruise directors and mentioned on surveys that HAL should list activities like this on the daily planner.  The answer I get from cruise directors is that it would need to be authorized through HAL and they won't do it.  I am willing to be the cruise critic point person for this activity on this cruise but also want to encourage HAL to do their part.  To this end, I have decided to make a pest of myself and to ask others to join me in this campaign.  Please if you agree with me, join in!  Even if you are not a Knit/stitch person your voice could help.  I plan to send this email weekly for now and if a reply isn't received will begin phone calls soon.

    Address emails to Guestrelations@hollandamerica.com  (800 599-8256)

Here is the paragraph I send on a weekly basis:

I would like an answer about this concern.  Being a 4*, I have been on many cruises.  I especially enjoy the cruises with several sea days.  The daily planner lists many activities and opportunities to meet for games etc.  I have asked several times to add a meet-up for those of us who knit or stitch.  The answer I get from the cruise director is that HAL must authorize such listings, and they won't do it.  My question is why?  We don't need anything special like coffee service or a dedicated room.  We don't need a staff member to supervise.  We just need a listing on sea days that we meet at a given time and place.  I know there is an interest.  On a couple cruises such meet-ups have been organized by Cruise Critic members and they are very well attended.  Please tell me why HAL won't authorize such a meet-up.

Looking forward to another Prinsendam cruise in March

  12. I agree - there are other repositioning cruises besides TA's.

I love TA's and continue on. I wouldn't want to do the San Diego to Vancouver/Seattle but I am not sure if that is consdiered repositioning or not? I think it is since they are changing to Alaska?

We did a Fort Lauderdale, Panama Canal cruise a couple years ago. Since we live in Washington, we stayed on board all the way to Vancouver BC. What we noticed was the change in energy that happened as 1/3 of the passengers left in San Diego and were replaced with people taking a three day cruise. When you are on a longer cruise (18 days I think) most of the passengers are retired and things are rather quiet and calm. On a three day cruise, party seems to be the goal. It was interesting to watch! I also felt that the service/entertainment was reduced for those three days.
