  1. I think it depends on what you need it for. Two cruises we didn’t haven any package but the last one we left our youngest behind and I got the social package so I could check in on him from time to time. I was able to send iMessages and twitter messages so that worked for us. Sometimes it was faster than others if I checked twitter but I was there to relax and disconnect.

  2. I would book/reserve now. I too will be in both places in July and will be going to Tropicante while in Costa Maya. The owner (Steve) suggested it’s never too early to reserve and recommended I do it sooner rather than later so I did.

  3. I got the middle plan but all of the below plans say they do not support wifi calling so I am confused.

Social Wi-Fi Plan ($5 USD per day)*

Access the most popular social websites and applications including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, SnapChat and the most popular airline sites. Does not include access to most websites and email. Does not support access to video and music streaming (such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Pandora), iMessage or Skype. Cellular-network-dependent Wi-Fi calling and Facetime services are also not supported.

Value Wi-Fi Plan ($12 USD per day)*

Access popular social websites, email and applications including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, SnapChat and the most popular airline sites as well as news, entertainment (not including streaming sites), sports, weather, banking and finance. Post pictures of your trip and make your friends jealous. Faster speeds than the Social Plan. Does not support Skype or video and music streaming (such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Pandora). Cellular-network-dependent Wi-Fi calling and Facetime services are also not supported.

Premium Wi-Fi Plan (17.70 USD per day)*

Our Premium Wi-Fi plan provides you access to all sites under the Social and Value Plans at the fastest possible connection on board (3 times faster than the Value Plan). Our Premium Plan also supports Skype calling where coverage allows. Does not support video and music streaming (such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Pandora). Cellular-network-dependent Wi-Fi calling and Facetime services are also not supported.

    * Price based on cruise-long plans, are subject to change without prior notice and may vary throughout the fleet.

** Daily social plans are currently not available on the Carnival Glory, Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Triumph.

Guests can upgrade from one plan to another and can use multiple devices per plan, including their smart phone, laptop or shipboard Internet cafe but only one device can be used at a time.

Understand the confusion, wish I could help more. I am 100 percent sure WiFi calling will work. It’s just a matter of the middle or top tier plan. If you don’t need to actually call, the social should keep you in touch and see how things are going and save you a little money too

  4. I dont mean to hijack this post but if you buy a wifi plan ( I bought the middle plan) does that mean that wifi calls are free and wont cost me $1.99 a minute?

You are correct, but as I mentioned, the social package does not allow WiFi calling. I just got off a ship and had the social package. I tried but it does not work.

  5. My research indicates that the cabana's at Princess Cay are very nice and similar to Half Moon Cay. The services are the same as far as snacks and drinks. The big difference is that the cabana's at Princess Cay are not water front where you can just walk in. Instead there is a fence and a wall. It's a few minute stroll to be able to get in the water.

    Hope this helps!

Actually that helps a lot. Being right there at the water is a big deal for us so knowing this may just save us some money whenever we make it to this island.

  6. I do wish this poster would return and let us know.

From what I can tell, there's absolutely no difference between the "regular" bungalows and the "Sanctuary" ones except the latter are adults-only.

Have read every thread I could find on the Private Islands board, and asked over there, but not getting responses. We sail at the end of the month.

Better late than never [emoji52]. Actually we didn’t get to got to Princess Cays and wound up back at Half Moon. Not sure why exactly. Although we wanted to see Princess Cays we had no complaints about “having to go to” Half Moon.

  7. Highly recommend Tropicante! Do not bother booking a cruise excursion in Costa Maya. We were actually there just last week, our first port on a Celebrity cruise. The place is quite popular, so book your lounger(s) ahead of time. Steve, the owner, is responsive and helpful. Taxi fares are $2pp each way from the port area, which takes some skill to exit. DH and I had bottled beer, guacamole, chips and salsa. I got a 1-hr beachside massage (wonderful)...total bill before tips was $50. There’s free onsite WiFi and attentive service by concierges and wait staff.

Tremendous info and thank you. We go in July so have a little bit of time still but I’ll take your advice on reaching out early rather than later

  8. Manahahaul? I think that's the beach that the port shuttle will take you to for a couple of bucks. Would be a

Shame to stay in the port area although it's a lovely port. There's a beautiful malecon with palm trees and some vendors with beach bars along the white sandy beach. Not to be missed!!

Thanks for the info and I agree, a beach is way better than a port

  9. The port area of Costa Maya is just a big tourist trap. Definitely not a place to hang out if you’re trying to not spend money (except for the free pool). So follow the signs through the port shopping area to the “shuttle to town.” The town is Mahahual. It’s about 5 minutes by shuttle. The shuttle is $2 each. There is a ticket sales counter right at the shuttle to buy them. The shuttle is an open-sided trailer with benches, pulled by a pick up truck.

The shuttle will take you to the downtown area of Mahahual, which is lined with beach restaurants. There are lots of “tourist agents” that will meet you at the shuttle and take you to the beach. We went to the area around Krazy Lobster. The loungers were free and there was plenty of shade. There was no obligation to buy food or drink, but we did get drinks. It’s safe there - there are beach vendors but they weren’t pushy. They wandered off as soon as we said no.

Cabs back to the port are plentiful and are $3/person. Not sure why they shuttle you there for $2 and run the shuttles empty back to the port, then have you take a cab back for $3! Lol!

We were just there Feb. 5 and really enjoyed it.

That’s the exact kind of info I was looking to get. Thank you very much! Without being there before I was just unsure if signage and whatnot so this was very helpful.

  10. there is a bus that goes to a very nice public beach, I think the bus was $2-3. The beach has plenty of toys, food and very good massages. My wife and I got 2-$25 hour massages. $25 will get you about 6 minutes on the ship. We found a place with some excellent fresh Cerviche and ice cold beer

Sounds right up are alley. Any idea on the name of the beach??

  11. First time to Costa Maya coming up in July and we are already doing an excursion in Cozumel so we would like to cost minimal here. Is there a beach right there at the port or very close by? If a cab is needed, any suggestions for close by public beaches (that would have bar/restaurant)? Any help is appreciated.

  12. I wish I had known to check for price drops, and they would honor them. I didn't learn until my 4th cruise, when I had joined Cruise Critic. This was back in the day of price drops granted up until sailing, not just before final payment.

I also wish I had known there are better areas of the ship to book your cabin on, to avoid sea sickness.

Actually I just learned today that even after final payment if you call your PVP they’ll look for a reduced price and give it to you as onboard credit

  13. Normally I would agree but I'm leaving my 2yr. old with grandparents for a 4 day cruise. I have to check on him.

True, and we'll be leaving our 4 year old behind next February and maybe this will help me decide at that time what we'll do, but when you check on your child....then what? It's not as if you can go back. I'm not trying to be snarky, legit asking and maybe it's piece of mind but what if they're simply just being a handful...now that's on your mind during the trip.
