  1. Glasgow, (my home town) does not have the historical past of Edinburgh. It was more of a commercial and industrial city, therefore there is no castle etc.

There is however plenty to do and see.

There is a HOHO bus which leaves from George Square and takes you round most of the places.

In George Square itself, you will find the City Chambers (town hall). Tripadvisor clients voted this the No1 attraction in Glasgow. It really is a stunning building.

If museums and art is your thing, about 100 yards from George Sq., in Queen St, there is the Museum of Modern Art.

Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery is world class. There is so much to see in the museum and the Art Gallery boasts many originals from eg Picasso, Dali, Monet, Degas, Rembrandt etc.

The Peoples Palace at Glasgow Green (city centre park) focuses on Glasgow history.

Entrance to all museums in Glasgow is free.

Glasgow Cathedral is a magnificent Gothic building, parts of which date back to the 1200s. Beside this there the Religious Museum and Provands Lordship which is the oldest house in Glasgow (1471)

The Glasgow School of Art was designed by Charles Rennie MacKintosh and is a popular attraction.

Glasgow is also a fantastic city for shopping with Buchanan Street the most popular area.

The city centre is fairly compact. It is also safe ( as long as you take normal precautions)

If I can be more specific about anything, please let me know.

Can you recommend a restaurant for lunch? Thank you for all your help.

  2. We enjoyed the Eye. We had booked timed tickets for early in the morning on the day of our departure. We only had a few hours before we needed to leave for the train station and this was a great thing to do. Few people in our pod and a nice way to see London for one last time.

  3. Well I hope "foodies" don't eat that kind of food! I promise you in all my years of living in / around Edinburgh I have never come across any restaurant where they cook deep-fried chocolate bars and I think they give a very bad impression of Scotland and its culture.

In the main tourist area in Edinburgh (and by that I mean the Royal Mile and New Town), there are NUMEROUS pubs, cafes and restaurants which don't serve the type of food in that video and which locals like me use. I hope you find the links below helpful and they give you a better idea of where you can go to find decent food when you are visiting.

We've just come back from New Orleans, Key West, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale / Miami and Charleston on a cruise and we never resorted to junk food or gator on a stick or anything like that but easily found a few places in the areas we were visiting where good quality, local food was available.

Do you have a favorite one or two?

  4. I don't remember if we booked the tour privately or from Celebrity, but I do remember that people could sign up on the dock. We had about a dozen or more people on the tour. It was not very expensive.

Thank you, we will be on Princess and would like to do a bike tour in one or maybe two ports, the cruise line is not offering any. Did you do any other bike tours?

  5. We did a great bike tour that took us to some very scenic places on the island. It is a great way to see the island.

Do you know the name of the bike tour that you did? Or was it something you did on your own? Thanks.

  6. We were on this cruise as well and had a totally different experience. It was the best cruise we have had in a really long time. The service and food were great. We thought they did great job NYE, we were anchored off Barbados and saw the fireworks at midnight. Yes, the pool was crowded on sea days but we have never been in a ship that the pool was not crowded on sea days. We would not hesitate to sail the Eclipse again. I'm sorry that your experience was not the same.

  7. We were on the Eclipse last week for the New Years cruise and we had a great time! The CD, Richard and the activities director, Marteen were entertaining and energetic to say the least. The MDR service was excellent as was the food. We enjoyed a pre dinner drink at the Martini Bar most nights, even with the classic drink package. This was the best cruise we have been on in a very long time!

  8. I wouldn't both to look at the "family friendly" cruises on river cruises, these seem to be geared to grandparents bringing elementary-aged children. That opens up your universe of options to any cruise line and like others said, just pick an itinerary that appeals to you.

However, if you were looking for a ship where all four of you could stay in one cabin... I'm not aware of aware river cruises with that room configuration.

That's what I was concerned about with the family cruise that it would be geared to elementary aged kids. Over the last couple years when we have cruised we always get two staterooms because having the second bathroom makes getting ready for the day/dinner so much easier.

We love the idea of being able to do a bike tour.

Thank you everyone for providing all this helpful information.

  9. We are considering a river cruise for next summer and would like it to be a family vacation. We have two DD who will be 22 and 17. Which line would be best suited for a family? I did see that Tauck offers some family cruises but it looked like the activities offered were geared toward young children.

  10. We celebrated New Years on the Emerald this and had a great time. It was not supposed to be a formal night but they made it formal, which we love! If you want to dine in a speciality restaurant that night I recommended making that reservation as soon as you get on board as they were completely full.

  11. Interesting, we were on the Emerald in December to celebrate my 50th. Our TA who we have been with for about 18yrs knew it was a special birthday. DH commented that it was strange that she didn't send anything but we shrugged it off. She often does send a bottle of wine. When we got home she called , as she always does, to make sure everything went well and we enjoyed our trip and she commented more then once that it was a special birthday for me. It was like she was waiting for me acknowledge we had received something. I felt uncomfortable coming out and asking did you send something so I left it alone but now I really wonder.

  12. Tina Ann we had booked the same limo company as you and guess what they didn't pick us up at the pier either. They called about an hour before they were supposed to get us and said the car had been in an accident and they would not be coming to get us. We also just got a cab to IAH not a big deal.

We had a great time and would sail on the Emerald again in a heartbeat. We thought the crew was extremely friendly and did a great job for the most part. Were a little disappointed in the MDR service and entertainment but all in all a great cruise and a awesome way to ring in the New Year!
