Both the Dutch and Belgian train operators offer assistance with travelling, and you can book help from the Belgian operators for international trains. Have a look at these sites and see if you think that will help - you can also contact them to ask any specific questions about your routes

However, Ine's suggestion about taking a coach with Flixbus might be better if there’s direct links

Sorry to hear about your husband.

Just checking you understand the distances and times involved here: well over 100 miles and 2 hours from Rotterdam to Bruges and well over 150 miles and 3 hours from Bruges to Amsterdam, across an international border.

If a taxi is willing to take you you’ll be looking at several hundred Euros/dollars for the round trip. Uber, as an example, is currently quoting over €600 just for the Bruges to Amsterdam leg.

If money’s no object, fine - otherwise I would stick to the train. I can’t believe Belgian and Dutch railways don’t offer a service of assisting with getting on and off trains, particularly if you book it in advance.

Hi peachquilter, check out Man In Seat 61 for train advice. https://www.seat61.com/european-train-travel-with-special-needs.htm

I think you may be assuming trains are similar to those in the US with a big step? That’s very rare in the UK/Europe, where it’s usually flat from the platform, or the station attendants have a ramp for the smaller steps. Also, people travel by train with luggage all the time - and are conditioned to help out those who find it a bit harder!

The train should be a pleasant experience, save your taxis for getting round the towns and cities which have cobblestones or uneven paving (e.g. Bruges)

Please be aware there are NO direct trains from Rotterdam to Bruges. You have at least 1 or 2 transfers! Which also might mean you need to change platforms too.

Maybe better look for buses like Flixbus.I copied their site, so you have an impression.

You luggage will be stored, your husband needs a few steps to get into and from the bus.

To get to the stop in Rotterdam it is an easy short cabride.

I know I'm a big cry baby, but I've got tears in my eyes that you all have graciously taken your time to assist us.  It has been a rough month with hospitals, doctors, tests.  Thank you so much. This is great info.  Hugs.

  2. We are hoping to travel for a few weeks after docking in Rotterdam, even though my husband recently suffered a fall.  We had planned on taking the train from Rotterdam to Bruges and then a few days later the train to Amsterdam.  Hubby now permanently cannot lift anything over 8 lbs and may be using a walker, hence how will we get our luggage onto the train.  I don't think I can do it by myself without holding up lines of passengers.  (This trip has been in the making for a couple years and we really don’t want to cancel.)  Any suggestions for still using the train?  Or does anyone have the name/phone of a shuttle/taxi service they recommend?  In our area, we use shared shuttles to defray the cost but I don’t see anything like that online.  Thx for your input.  Marilyn

We visited Keukenhof Gardens on a turn-around day in April, 2015 with no problem at all.

Enjoy the gardens, they are beautiful in the Spring!

Not a problem at all.      You will have a transit pass and can leave as soon as they call for walk offs or any time.   I believe if you leave, you will not be allowed to re-board until general boarding commences around 11.    The pier is a very short walk to Central Station.

On Apex we had our B2B meeting the day before disembarkation - we were given new cards and a Transit Pass.  We left early to enjoy Amsterdam and returned later, walk by embarking passengers and reboard the ship.  Even found a lovely street market to get a bunch of locally grown flowers and have a coffee before returning to the ship.

Thx for your input.  He has been a while since we've done a B2B and I wanted to feel comfortable about going to the Gardens.

We are preparing to leave on a B2B in a few weeks and were looking at our cruise history earlier today.  Once we hit 3000 loyalty points we had stopped looking at our cruise history and accumulated loyalty points, but now that we will hit double Zenith shortly we are starting to  pay attention again.

According that history we have done 31 turnaround days.  We have done them in Asia, South Pacific, South America, North America, and Europe.  Our transit passes have always been distributed in the succinct instruction letter outlining the turnaround day process both for those wanting to depart the ship for the day, and those who want to stay either onboard or re-board very quickly. That letter and the transit passes have been either distributed at a B2B meeting or delivered to the stateroom mail slot prior to the turnaround day.  When B2B passengers depart the ship on the turnaround day a special beep (when you scan the sea pass card) alerts the security personnel that you are on a B2B and that sea pass card is collected.  The instruction letter informs you where you pick up the new sea pass card to re-board the ship.  Even if folks are in the same stateroom for all legs there will be a new sea pass card.

From what you are saying, it sounds like I am safe to pay for a nonrefundable quick trip to the tulip gardens on turnaround day.  Thank you for that info and thank you to everyone for your input.  Marilyn

  5. We will be on a B2B cruise in a few months and we would like to disembark (7:00 – 7:30) early on the day between the 2 cruises so that we can go on a private tour in Amsterdam. Is that possible on a Celebrity cruise? Will I need to do something special in order to get off the ship early? We will be staying in the same room for the second cruise.  Marilyn

The fact that one has luggage doesn’t mean one can’t take the train. I’ve taken the train to and from Schiphol carrying 2 suitcases, a hand luggage sized trolley and a backpack just by myself. I managed to get all this on and off the train without problems.
I can understand this is not for everyone, but having luggage doesn’t mean you can’t take the train.

Can you tell me how the luggage is handled on the train.  Can you keep it beside you?  Is it stored?  In Ireland we dropped all luggage at the front of the train car.  Thx u.

we took the metro as the tram was not running yet on a Sunday.  When boarding the train in Rotterdam and exiting, be aware there are steps and have to lift luggage up two steps onto Train.  We are in 70's and did manage as my husband lifted our 25 inch cases.  If you have an issue with that,  you may want to make other arrangements.

We will dock in Rotterdam next May and hope to take the train to Brugges.  While on the train, how do you handle your luggage?  Do you keep it beside you?  Store it on the train?  We are also in our 70's and I'm just a little overwhelmed with train transfers, luggage, schedule, etc.  After staying in Brugges for a few days, we will take the train to Amsterdam.  Thx for your help.

When they canceled the first leg of our B2B they said tough sh*t you booked 2 cruises - not our problem....

Thank you all for your input. I guess I got lucky today (and I was ready for a fight), but RCL did NOT charge us a "change fee" or penalty for moving the second leg of our B2B. So we rebooked both of our cruises without any problem. (Maybe it was because RCL had cancelled the transatlantic, who knows.) Thx again.

  9. I am intrigued by the enhancements to the Independence OTS. I think my teens would love all of the "fun" stuff being added. Is there speculation that it will still do the sailings to Spain, etc? We had wanted to do a British Isles cruise from Southampton. We are currently booked on Brilliance from Amsterdam but with 3 sea days and 1 rock wall and 1 pool (that kids can use) it isn't as appealing. We prefer lots of activities no matter how port intensive a cruise will be.

Hi all. Help ... I booked B2B cruises with NON-REFUNDABLE deposits. RCL has cancelled the first cruise (Jewel TA - San Juan to Rome). I know I can get the deposit back on the first cruise, but what I am concerned about is the second cruise - Jewel 5/11/19 Rome/Greece/Rome. Is there anything I can do to get the nonrefundable deposit back for it w/o having to pay a change fee? After all, RCL cancelled the TA cruise, not me!! And I only booked a B2B so we could enjoy numerous days at seas and I am NOT interested in flying roundtrip to Rome just for a 9 day cruise. What do you think? I have not yet called the travel agent, hoping to hear from you first. Thx. Marilyn

  10. Just off the Vision yesterday (great cruise and crew!) and we were looking at possibly booking Enchantment for another 4 or 5 nighter in the near future out of Galveston. If anyone is interested in the "why" of the ship shuffle, the answer we got from more than a few people was essentially Cuba demand. Enchantment is being used to cover for ships being used for Cuba sailings (which are high demand and making RCI more money).

So Galveston waits another year to get our summertime (and thus year-round) 4/5 night sailings. Incredibly bummed for those that had their reservations cancelled.

I know I am late to this parade but we were just cancelled by RCL for the Jewel TA April, 2019 cruise. I am not a happy camper because we booked a B2B. I don't want to go on the second cruise since they cancelled the first one. I have a nonrefundable deposit of $500 on the second cruise. Do any of you have any suggestions on how I can cancel the second cruise (we only scheduled it because we wanted a B2B) and get my deposit back?

  11. Is this for your cruise at the end of June? If so I would skip the Everglades that time of year. I don't think there is a place on the planet that is hotter and muggier than the Florida Everglades and the mosquitos are big, black swarms of violent pests.

It just isn't pleasant and can be miserable.

BlueHerons: We arrive in Ft. Lauderdale the evening of April 18 and board our ship no later than 3:00 on the 20th (Port Everglades). I was thinking of Everglades Holiday Park (1/2 day show) and the water taxi. Do you recommend these this time of year? Any other recommendations, especially for the last day when we will need to be on the ship no later than 3:00. Thanks for your input.

  12. I booked a cruise directly through NCL last week. At the time of booking, I did NOT mention that I had $2,500 in gift certificates. I obtained a discount for being a Latitude members ($100 each) and another 15% discount for my husband being a veteran. Has anyone heard if there is any type of a conflict with the VA and Latitude discount AND the gift certificates. I am a little concerned NCL may say "you can't use your gift certificates AND Latitude and VA discounts." Anyone had anything like this occur?
