  1. To my wife and I a cruise means this -

you go to bed and next day wake up in a new country to explore.....

'explore' meaning exactly that - to discover new places for oneself.....

being tied to a predetermined 'tour' just hopping on and off a coach is not exploring.....

We tend to visit museums/parks/sites of interest and cathedrals/churches...rarely to we find ourselves in hordes of tourists so our risk of 'cross-infection' is kept to a minimum level.

  2. Surely there is also a logistical challenge of huge proportion. Let's imagine a cruise ship of some 2000+ passengers berthing at a port and that the majority are on board anticipating a ship-organised list of excursions [assuming that current protocol continues]. Coaches may well be restricted to 20 per coach -so if you do the maths it becomes a logistical nightmare.....

  3. This is what we did 4 years ago [used the excellent TJ Tours] - in September next year we sail in to St Petersburg and hope that by then we can book with the independent tour operator once again [approved by St Petersburg authorities]

I will be pre registering and booking with the hope that in 2 years time we will be back to some sort of normality....if not, at least we will have had something positive to look forward to and with it being 5% deposit are prepared to take the hit and lose it for the pleasure of that.

I have a feeling that those who have seen the news on vaccines this morning will be in the vanguard for cabins -especially if fluid pricing kicks in.......

  5. I hope my post and that of others  may put your mind at rest. On various cruises we have 'adopted' sometimes 1- maybe 2 ladies on their own. They have proved to be delightful company. Also for the solo male my wife thinks it would not be a problem to intermingle. I am referring to the times ahead when vaccines will bring cruising back to a normality of some kind regarding mixing. It just may take time....

  6. Interesting---as someone new to this forum I was thinking how reasoned are the points I have read. Of course a good book is preferable but I like the forum for the prospect of provoking a response from the reader. Especially if it is a responsible response.....😉

  7. This is the most emotive issue as one could only imagine. It intrigues me to keep reading such phrases as ''what are the government doing/going to do about it?' -the correct question to pose should be this 'what are YOU doing about it?'

Governments do not spread this disease - that is done by individuals. I really am amazed that the world over one sees a similar mantra...... take obesity -it IS there -it is literally and metaphorically spreading. 'Governments' do not 'force-feed' individuals with trash food -we are mainly responsible for our own destiny and that of our children.

  8. Wish I could give answers to all parts for you -here is my current understanding.

If you instigate the cancellation BEFORE there is a cancellation by Cunard -you will lose the deposit.

I am unable to offer advice IF there should be a 14 day self-isolation when landing in England.

These are the current terms offered to anyone wishing to exchange their cruise to a later date:-

    • Transfer your booking to any Cunard voyage currently on sale (and not just to those within the next 12 months).
    • Transfer your booking to a voyage of higher or lower value (and not just of a higher value, as is usually the case).
    • Transfer your booking an unlimited number of times (and not just once).
    • Transfer your bookings free of charge, as we will waive the current £100 administration charge for each transfer made.

Personally I would sit tight until approaching the time when the balance has to be paid and IF there was still a degree of uncertainty [for example -the 14 day self-isolation rule] -then I would find a cruise some time ahead and switch. PS -I am guessing that if it is Cunard who cancel your cruise then you may well be offered 125% against a future cruise.
