We thought it would be a one time thing, but are booked on second one … both 180 days on Oceania.  There are people who do the world cruise every year on HAL.  I also know several people on Oceania that have done 3-4 of the 180-day voyages.  For us, a considerably different itinerary was a must in order to book a second time regardless of the fact that we thoroughly enjoyed our first world cruise.

If you don’t mind me asking did you wait for retirement to do it

A world cruise is on my bucket list, although it's probably not going to happen for quite a few years yet. Still, not too early to start dreaming. I went back and read your first world cruise blog and enjoyed it very much. I'll definitely be following this one on Holland America! I've sort of narrowed my choice down to HAL or Princess, so really interested in reading about your HAL experience.

Of course my choice of cruise could change by the time I actually start planning in earnest. (Who knows who'll be doing world cruises in 6-8 years when I finally retire.) For now, I'm saving for a solo world cruise, and will enjoy "travelling along" with you.

I travel solo, booking a regular cabin and paying whatever "single supplement" is offered at the time I book.  Once I decided I could handle the length of a world cruise, I started looking at the cost.

I did a point-by-point comparison between Holland America's 2020 World Cruise and Regent's.  They are very different cruise lines.  Holland America is "additive" -- they have a base fare, and nearly everything else is charged in addition to that (gratuities, excursions, drinks except for basic stuff like water, tea, and plain coffee;  specialty dining, etc.). The length of the respective cruises was nearly identical (131 days for RSSC; 128 days for HAL).

In terms of base fare ONLY, Regent was $20K cheaper than HAL.  That's BASE FARE only, bearing in mind that Regent is all-inclusive and HAL is not.  When you add in the extras you have to pay extra for on HAL (gratuities, anticipated costs of drinks and excursions), the difference is even greater.  Also, Regent includes some "extras" that many other cruise lines don't:  free onboard medical care, free first-class airfare to/from embarkation/disembarkation port, free visa package, free internet, etc.

Yes, Regent's "per person double occupancy" fare is higher than HAL's, but the "single supplement" is very different:  42-45% for Regent; 100% for HAL.  And that made the difference.

I'm at an age where physical challenges are presenting themselves in ever accelerating succession.  I know I won't be able to travel like this forever -- I have a couple of progressive "things" that are already making even cruise travel more difficult than I like, so I have a daily reminder that time is short and I'd better do as much as I can while I still have the means and health to do so.  I know I would regret it if I didn't seize the opportunity to see the world while I can.  I started planning for this when I was 7 yrs old (making a list of "places I must see before I die") and started saving for it when I was in my 20s.  It took some serious health issues in 2014-2016 to finally get me to start doing it.

Making up for lost time, I have 3 cruises booked this year: 28 days roundtrip from San Diego to Hawaii, Tahiti, and the Marquesas in Mar-Apr on HAL; a 7-day Alaska cruise from Seattle on Oceania; and a 35-day trip to Ecuador and Peru from Seattle ("Incan Empires") also on HAL in Sep-Oct.  Then in 2020, the 131-day Regent World Cruise (Jan 24 - Jun 4), a 20-day Alaska trip on Viking Ocean in August, and a 68-day LA to Miami around South America on Regent Oct 29, 2020 - Jan 5, 2021.  I'll have to see how I'm doing physically before I book too much beyond that.

I think you get both kinds.  I've read just lately about several people who are jumping straight in.  We are veteran cruisers, so we know what we would like or not like.  My mum jumped in back in the late 70's, was gone for five months on a freighter, with a handful of other passengers and some officers for company--that was brave but she loved it.

I myself would recommend that you try out the cruise line you are considering FIRST, before you book any long cruise with them.

Really tough question. Nicest? Most spectacular scenery? Best sights? Most antiquities or art? Cutest or most charming? Most interesting?

How about a top five or ten?

French Polynesia, Barcelona,  Istanbul, Honfleur, Sorrento, Rio, Luxor...hard to choose but FP takes the cake for beauty.

I finally got the correct luggage tags from Luggage Forward last week....at least they arrived and do have the correct pickup date on them.

And speaking of the pickup date...it's tomorrow, Thurs. Jan. 17.  Hopefully all goes well and FedEx does arrive.  I spent the past 2 days carefully packing and weighing the suitcases...I'm so ready to move on and get to the ship!!  Peggy, I hope your issues with them will get resolved so you can relax too.  I do plan to let Oceania know how confusing and frustrating the experience with this company was and I'll suggest they investigate further before using them again.

There was a younger couple (read: active 40's) on our 2018 Princess WC who took their bikes with them on the ship. At every port, we'd see them off-loading their wheels and taking off on their cycling exploration of each new place. They brought their own adventure to every port of call.

And don't mistake age for inactive. We had one couple in their 90's (who were my heroes!) who climbed the Sydney Harbor bridge. Before that, I'd see them training on the Pacific Princess staircases, taking them two at a time!

The beauty of cruising is that you can be as active or sedentary as you wish.

I’m hoping my early 60s early retirement present but that’s a long time away 😂😂

  5. Well I'm 70, and I'm not going for two years, so... My mom went on a WC when she was about my age, although she went on a freighter. She was gone for 5 months, and in those days there was only the occasional letter.

My advice is if you really want to travel, make that concept a priority. I've known a number of families who upped stakes and took off to travel the world for a year or more, taking their children with them. This is somewhat easier if the kids are small, but not too small--they should be old enough to build memories of the trip. Think about a strategy for taking a year off work, or working online, or if a year is out of the question, do it for several months. Then start saving!

For a real World Cruise, without kids, you'll have to wait at least until they're in college, if not out of college and settled into lives of their own. Again, start saving!

are most people wealthy on world cruises or do you all way get working class people to
  6. I suppose it would be alot easier to take a world cruise if you're wealthy (and I'm sure many world cruisers are), but I am definitely NOT wealthy!! I'm just a middle class registered nurse....and everyone knows that nurses do not make alot of money. But, as Scrapnana and Heidi13 said, I have always lived very frugally and try to save as much of my money as possible. We all have our priorities....some people like to drive new expensive cars, some like to live in big expensive homes, some love to go on shopping sprees, etc. I love to travel and prefer to use my savings for that. :D

So I suppose you have to prortize what you wanna do really
